I don't believe the Coronavirus will get in America out of hand like it did in China. I also believe the danger will pass in a fee weeks if we can just push through and not panic. There are a few reasons I say this. The most important reason is that we were forewarned. Lets hear it for the the power of free speech. It's something the Chinese people lack and allowing better communication could have saved more of them.
The Chinese people were not warned about the virus. Indeed, the Chicoms did their best not to warn their people. It was only when it got out of control that they had to take measures to fight the virus. So they chose to enforce mandatory social distancing among other more violent measures.
Americans are practicing social distancing in spades. As a people we do so more than any country. We like our space and we've extended that space. Of course, in the long run it's not good for our society.
The other thing I think people are practicing is better hygiene practices. People are washing their hands more often and longer. They are buying up and using sanitizer. This is crucial to stopping any virus.
Lastly, denying access to this country from places where the virus is out of control is vital. This inhibits the "viral input" into our communities. The travel ban will probably have to extend until the Europeans and others get their act together.
I don't see a reason why we can't beat this virus quickly. The measures have been extreme for a free and open country but they were implemented early. I don't see any reason why this virus won't peak soon and the cases start dropping precipitously.
No problem...:^)
Sometimes the patient explanation to the pearl clutching gang, I miss the referral to someone else. Please forgive.
There is some merit to what you are saying, but the flu killed dozens of times as many vulnerable people in this area in the 2017 to 2018 season as this is likely to do even if things escalate dramatically. This is obviously not something to be trifled with but the hype on this is spectacular and the panic and fear is completely out of proportion to the actual risks.
LOL...Sure....
“This virus may go away within a few weeks, but the Democrats and LSM will continue to push it..”.
Exactly. Defeat Trump in November is the name of their game.
It won’t work if we all get out and vote. Our side will be more fired up than ever.
Doc, you must know that there’s a large segment of FRee Republic that are clinical paranoiacs. Certifiable. Throw in with them the everyday germophobes and hypochondriacs, and you wind up with these loons posting nonsense nonstop.
They’ve live all their lives waiting for this moment. This is it, the apocalypse. It validates their warped worldview, and it’s an opportunity for them to lecture all us unwashed who don’t sit in bunkers with loaded guns awaiting The End. Anyone who won’t subscribe to the hysteria are “deniers.”
I call them the Howard Hughes wing of FRee Republic.
More contagious, more deadly, longer incubation period making it harder to screen for. How is a Pinto not a Ferrari? They both have four wheels and a combustion engine.
In my opinion, that is the whole purpose behind this “panic” thing...
number three for me!
I think the problem in Italy is the way they great each each other.
Since we’ve just started widespread testing I’m sticking with three to four, but your numbers may vary. Our local hospitals are taking it very seriously as are our personal doctors. I’m not panicking just being prudent. My wife is already on oxygen, she’s ground zero for this.
Thank you, and prayers for you to beat the cancer.
As I said elsewhere. ...Weve changed OUR behavior. ..but we are 69...we do not work, go to school, etc...and we can communicate via phone or computer with family for awhile...shutting down everything for Retirees ( and immune compromised ) is basically whats going on.
If you are strong you will probably recover. You will have a 25% chance of lung damage. Is it permanent? I don’t know.
If the frail, infirm and old die of this some of it will be on your hands. Very Christian of you.
First, don't believe every number the Chinese government puts out. Second, the Chinese government implemented a draconian quarantine across the entire country. In some cases actually welding apartment doors shut.
That's isn't going to go over too well here in the US, but we can self quarantine. Below is a chart Travis McGee posted on another thread which gives you an idea of how well social distancing (a quarantine) will work in stopping the Corona virus here in the US, and what happens if we don't.
What BS. We have greatness because we act, not because we stick our head in the sand as you are doing, we, many of us still have individual ruggedness, which you apparently lack. Are you prepared, have you prepared? Are you upset at calls for others to prepare? Do you think it is okay to wait until sick to then expect others to provide for you? Will you be one feeling entitled to treatment or happy to sit in an overcrowded facility? Will you be one of the ones begging for food because you are too sick to go to the store and don't have enough food at home? Are you telling your friends and family to just ignore it all and go through your day without a thought or preparation?
I'd rather have people around serious about things, preparing for things, being prepared, etc., than ones with their heads in the sand, or heads up their a55e5 dismissing anyone that might want to do something or ask about it all. Ignorance may be bliss to you, but if things do progress as they did in China and Italy, let's see how you feel about it when it becomes personal.
In a few months we will look back on this as one huge overreaction. How many people have the flu right now? Considerably more than Coronavirus.
The Italians thought it was “just the flu”.
Was thinking about seroconversion yesterday. Any idea when that might be known, based on your experience? I know you're not an epidemiologist, but wanted to ask.
The only difference this time, economic and societal meltdown.

The frailty of our society is once again illustrated. Let’s hope we learn some valuable lessons from this experience that will enable us to be more proactively ready to deal with future crises. I shudder to think what kind of fix we would be in if this disease was of a more virulent nature.
Some positive things can come out of the Coronavirus epidemic with proper leadership to ensure a higher national readiness posture.
