Any Open Shell (formerly Classic Shell) experts here?

I purchased a new PC with Windows 10 the beginning of the year, and one of the first things I did was install Open Shell (used to be called Classic Shell). I had never used it before, but many Windows 7/8 users who were forced into Windows 10 found it to be a useful application to install.

For the most part, I like Open Shell. But there is one issue that is bugging me that I can't seem to work around. In a Windows Explorer window, there is a Search box. Normally, past Explorer searches are retained and can be retrieved. That still works. What doesn't work is the ability to single out a past search string and delete it from the history. The normal ability to do this within Windows 10 (without Open Shell installed) is unavailable to me with Open Shell installed. The only option I have with the search history is to delete the entire history via the Explorer search menu. That's not what I want.

For the Open Shell users, is there a way to make this happen? Or does Open Shell block this feature normally available in Windows 10?

I considered asking the Open Shell team about this particular issue, but from recent responses on their website, they aren't really helpful about possible bug fixes or feature enhancements. Pretty much a middle finger for anyone wanting to ask questions or make suggestions.

Assuming this issue cannot be bypassed while using Open Shell, does anyone have another suggestion for a similar overlay to Windows 10 for past Windows 7/8 users?

I think I have something else interfering with this feature. I exited Open Shell for the current session, bringing back the old start menu and explorer windows. The ability to delete individual search strings is still not there. This may be related to something else I have done to my PC.

Look for that string in the registry, then delete that entry. Registry editing is a bit dicey.

I think you may be right about it being something else. I’ve never had the need to delete individual search terms, but I got curious, so I just poured through Open Shells advanced settings and didn’t see anything related to your goal of deleting single terms. Please follow up when you find a solution, so that I may put my curiosity to bed.

If I am reading the comments correctly in my Internet search on the topic, I think this capability disappeared with Windows build 1909, along with other search capabilities (like date range searches). Some unhappy campers out there.

Do NOT screw with your registry without backing it up first. Your problem may not be with OpenMenu at all, as Microsoft released an update a few months ago that plays havoc on the search feature in Windows 10 and it doesn’t seem to be resolved yet.

Windows Explorer is called File Explorer in Win10.

Search in File Explorer does show old searches in sequence, which can be individually deleted by hovering over the searched-for item and pressing the Delete key. If you are talking about Windows Search, not File Explorer Search, Microsoft has been seriously screwing with Windows Search in its massive updates, to the point that the feature temporarily disappeared on many users Win 10 boxes, so a Windows update might be responsible for your problem, not Open Shell: https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-search-down-many-showing-blank-box-instead-search-results

Not that I think this is a great idea, but just FYI, the final version (4.3.1) of Classic Shell, though abandoned by its developer, still works in the most recent version of Win10.

This is amazing since others could search a file system way back there in the 50s and 60s.

Yeah, that’s what I am reading and am experiencing. Strange, because the search entries are there in the registry, but the ability to remove any single search string from the history with the search box is gone with 1909.

It's File Explorer I am talking about. Thanks for the clarification.

The ability to do the above no longer works with build 1909 for Windows 10. That option is gone. Doesn't matter if I have Open Shell/Classic Shell or no shell add-on installed. It's gone. Seems to be pretty well documented by those who have been complaining about it the past couple of months.

(OpenShell not OpenMenu. It’s that Corona thing. Got to get lime slices, stat!)

LOL. In the 1950’s and ‘60’s we had Card Catalogs. Now if a library’s computer system goes down you’re on your own.

After all of these years, there still isn’t a way to directly display a JPG file directly. You can have the features they deign to give you, not the ones everybody needs.

I only know the Bourne Shell (sh), C-Shell (csh), Z-Shell) (zsh), and the Bourne Again Shell (bash). Never played around with ksh, tcsh, or others.

It's gone.

You're right. I just upgraded a 1903 box to 1909 and the individual delete feature no longer works.

Thanks for the confirmation. Hopefully you can uninstall the 1909 update and get back to 1903. Unfortunately for me and all those who bought a Windows 10 PC with 1909 already installed, it cannot be removed.

I read rumors that a fix to the search function might be coming in April 2020 (this was from earlier in the year), but the primary reason was it locking up on people attempting to perform a File Explorer search. I'm not sure if it will address the above and other search issues, like the lost of date range searching.

I use Free Commander, not File Explorer, for date range searches and searches of file contents.

Open/Classic Shell ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to Army Air Corps for the ping!

Do what like but Windows 10 is perfectly usable as is. You are wasting your time.
