Yesterday's thread is here: http://freerepublic.com/focus/chat/3823939/posts?page=1301
Plus we avoid crowded places if we can. I have a park right across the street to the west. I need to walk and get fresh air.
The Hudson Hawk keeps our air nice and clean, as opposed to other big cities. It blows up off the Atlantic and then heads east. We have an east wind only when precipitation is coming.
Although I don’t think he’s at all in it for money. He wants to volunteer his expertise, is willing to work in prisons, etc.
I have been picking up stuff at various stores for the last 2 weeks, but I went out earlier to do my last big run.
From now on, I still plan to do 1 trip a week to get fresh items and to replenish what I have eaten during week. I will be supplementing the fresh food with both frozen and canned goods.
This will require an adjustment to the way I eat, because I normally only eat fresh fruits and vegetables. I think a lot of people eat like this and that is why there have been large runs on stores.
FYI the store I was in had its last shipment on Friday evening. There were a few things that they were out of (TP, rice, cream cheese) and the meat and bread sections were pretty meager, but there was still plenty of nutritious food to be had.
And I live about 2 hours southwest of DC.
What’s with the cream cheese? It’s always sold out.
For all those that may not be aware, there is a FR posting helper addon for firefox and chrome, https://cynwoody.appspot.com/fr_posting_form_enhancer.html
It gives you a toolbar for adding html tags to format your posts here. Nice time saver and helps with those of you who don’t know html.
I dont know.
I was going to put some in the freezer. When you are trying to get creative with food, it can be a good thing to add. It adds creaminess to sauces, casseroles, etc.
While a lot of people certainly eat fresh and perishable groceries.
There are likely a LOT more that almost exclusively eat out or eat frozen stuff.
Local facebook rumor: nearest Home Depot is selling out of the small chest freezers as people stock up on meat and frozen veg/etc. Our power flickered a cpl times yesterday (unusual because no storms even close to us) and hubby and I joked it was everybody plugging in their new freezers...
Yeah, that I would believe.
I plan to eat mostly out of my freezer for now, but have enough variety in non-perishables that I could survive a while on them.
That is why I did so many runs to the store. I basically had to rethink my pantry.
There is work going on along those lines. Contact anyone you know who works in a hospital. Some of their technical and engineering support personal are working on projects.
Anyone can get very sick and tie up critical health care resources.
The youngs will stay full Flubro full time till an athlete or celebrity dies, then they will go full time Zombie Apocalypse.
dark veil
For me that dark veil comes in waves. So many repercussions, so many ways to get sick, so much that could go wrong. I think its a process of coming to acceptance with where we are at and where we might go. Then you think of something new to worry about or guard against, feel helpless, then develop the best plan you can, come to acceptance and feel better.
Yes. If the chicoms can afford $143/hr to drive trucks of dead people that officially didn’t die of Wuhan virus to crematoriums that aren’t officially running 24/hrs a day, then the US governemnt can certainly afford to pay whatever it needs to keep the electricity flowing.
Just watched Cuomo’s press conference. He gets it, he is clear, he is determined, but he needs federal help. I hope it will be forthcoming.
No politics allowed. We’re Americans helping Americans.
Plus he’s the kind of speaker who gets the points across. Bravo.
Everybody please forget the grudges and the cheap politics. It’s not about that anymore.
Poor mans vacuum seal:
Put the item in a triple ziploc. Insert straw to one side of the opening.
Close the ziploc all the way to the straw compressing the bag to remove as much air as possible.
Then suck the rest of the air out of the bag thru the straw; pull out straw quickly and close the rest of the ziploc.
Cant remember where I read about that trick, but it was many years ago. Maybe these days youll want to use a syringe with a plastic tube on the end.
I will say that Love’s truckstops clean the heck out of those showers between truckers, not so much the restrooms. My youngest came back from Iraq on R&R and made us stop at the one nearest the airport so he could take a shower. Said he hadn’t had one in 3 days and he wasn’t going any longer. Cleanest bathroom I have seen in a public place in forever.
Been on septic systems most of my adult life. You just dump enzymes down them and get them pumped on a regular basis. Only time we ever had problems was on the old 65 year old system after excessive rain, like “are we going to need an ark to get out of here rain”.
My experience is if you ONLY put waste water, urine, and poop in there, you can go decades without needing to pump. All my kitchen waste is landfilled.
I am glad you are feeling better today. I understand where you are coming from in this situation. Been having to take mental health breaks from all of the news. Take a walk, call a friend, read a book, anything for a few minutes to get another perspective. I will keep you in my prayers.
Normally yes. I prefer not to risk it after having problems with the old system on the farm. Not being able to flush toilets is not my idea of fun. Maybe I am just paranoid. lol
