As of 2018 there was about 1100 gigawatt of generating capacity, with nuclear about 9% of that total. That less than one-tenth of installed capacity can likely be shut down in a controlled fashion during the slack spring season. Some of that nuke capacity has been retired in the last two years since that 2018 reference published.

Summer peak demand usually is around 750 to 800. This might be more demanding, depends how maintenance shutdowns had been scheduled, and whether any deferrals occur during the Spring. Straight gas turbine peaking units that usually only run hours a day at least have NG available at rock bottom prices for now.

I’m mad. My neighbor asked me if I wanted a small plastic drum, 22 1/2 gallons is what they are I think. It probably had something nasty in it so no good for water so I told him no and he tossed it in the burn pile. Two days later I had a thought. I could have fit a whole summer’s worth of diesel in it for my little tractor.

I’ve got 55 gallon plastic drums but storing gasoline is a little risky and I wouldn’t use that much diesel before it went bad. Lots of air space will help it go bad faster too. I might go buy a couple of proper 5 gallon jugs, yellow for diesel and red for gas. I do have a couple of old gas tanks from vehicles but I’d have to peak inside and make sure their not rusty.

“The virus _loves_ politicians—easy pickings...”

Ok, what’s the downside, other than 2 people that come to mind?

Probably quite a few. A lot of people have significant decrease in cardiopulmonary function over their life, and as I have told people “age is a pre-existing condition”. I also believe that the whole “smoking changes the ACE2 receptors in the lungs” has been wrong the whole time. Smoking damages the lungs and reduces their efficiency, making you less likely to survive a severe lung infection. Also note that heart disease is the #1 co-morbidity. Basically, any condition that weakens your cardiopulmonary system is going to be a significant co-morbidity. Age, smoking, asthma, emphysema, COPD, heart disease, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, etc.

If you are healthy enough to work, you work!

That's the way it's always been at every company I've worked for. Small blue collar businesses. Can;t afford to shut down and the employees can't afford to take time off.

Yeah gasoline doesn’t keep very well.
I think diesel has a good shelf life if you put the proper additives in. I used to work at Allison, we had to put a biocide in our automatic transmissions because if they sat in inventory a long time, you could get algae growing in the lube oil. Diesel can do the same thing.

re: donated food

Disneyland has announced that due to their closing, they will be donating all the food items that would normally be sold in the park over the next two weeks to local food banks. (not just the junk food items but also the food items sold in the restaurants)

Yeah, I was just reading up on storing diesel the other day. Still have the tab open, which makes it all the worse that I didn’t grab that little plastic drum. Two 5 gallon jugs and fill the tank. Ought to last a while and I won’t have to mow for a while. It’s a sub-compact Mitsubishi tractor with a 3 cylinder.

“**MORE THAN 50% OF PEOPLE IN FRENCH ICUS ARE YOUNGER THAN 60.*”

I suspect it has more to do with policy than with the age distribution of the affected. France is simply conserving resources via the equivalent of death panels.

Yay, Socialized Medicine!
