In the last 48 hours, as the coronavirus has raced across the United States, the NBA has suspended its season, more than three dozen colleges and universities have kicked students off campus, President Trump has barred travelers from Europe from entering the country … and MLB, its season still two weeks away, has exposed some 100,000 people to a global pandemic.

It’s time to cancel spring training.

I am not a fan of most WHO or UN source material. The statistics you cite are from the WHO, 2013, and are for the world. They also say 50 per cent of the reported deaths come from pedestrian, motorcycle and bicycle deaths. This, I don’t see how this is relevant to the Corona virus conversation.

The problem with the exponential charts is this is not exponential it will be a bell shaped curve. It will level out and decline but we will have trashed our economy and. notice over mass hysteria. And the same number of people will likely catch the illness anyway. If the effort was put into a vaccine and treatments rather than buying toilet paper we would get a lot further. And BTW... The Corona virus is waiting just outside your door... And so is the flu, the common cold, measles and a host of other communicable diseases... You stay in your house with your M15 and your warehouse full of toilet paper.

You are correct. Traffic deaths have nothing to do with viral epidemics.

Transportation has obvious benefits, but a million transportation- travel deaths a year worldwide is a big number. So is 40,000 for US auto traffic deaths per year..

I was thinking that OUTDOOR events would not be nearly as risky as indoor gatherings.

In the FWIW department .. just got back from my weekly grocery trip to the big Walmart in our very rural, very well-behaved area.

TP was just about gone, PTs were getting pretty scarce, no iso alcohol or pre-sanitized wipes to be found, milk coolers were way below stock, etc, etc.

I'm presumptuous enough to aver that the average income and intelligence level is above par in these parts.
People are either beginning to take this seriously and/or a degree of panic is setting in.

Oh, and the local Patriot League uni has gone to online classes exclusively - only kids on campus are exchangers who can't get home for whatever reason.
