Nearly 200 people in Italy have died in 24 hours as cases of coronavirus in the country continue to rise.
There have been 827 deaths in Italy and the number of cases increased by more than 2,000, from 10,149 to 12,462, official figures showed.
In the worst-hit area, the northern region of Lombardy, there have been 617 fatalities, an increase of 149 in the last 24 hours.
The number of cases in the region - which includes Italy's financial capital Milan and has seen the majority of cases of the virus - has also risen by 1,489 in the last 24 hours, Reuters reported.
It comes after the Republic of Ireland reported its first death of a patient who tested positive for coronavirus, the country's Health Protection Surveillance Centre has said.
In a statement, chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of this patient.
"I urge the media and the public to respect their privacy at this difficult time.
"We continue our efforts to interrupt the transmission of this virus. It will take all of us, collectively to succeed. Please continue to follow public health advice."
Countries including Sweden, Belgium, Bulgaria and Kuwait have also reported their first fatalities following positive tests for COVID-19 - the disease caused by coronavirus.
Earlier on Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said up to 70% of the country's population could be infected with coronavirus, with the number of deaths linked to the disease rising across the world.

I think the max deaths China ever reported in a day was around 150
The media still refuses to report demographics of the infected or the dead.
Daily Mail reports so many deaths in Italy BECAUSE older age population. That is a key statistic. So many panicking for no reason.
The poor people who have to try to manage to keep on fighting all the non-stop sickness and death.
It would be immensely useful if the race, age, and the underlying medical conditions of those who have become seriously ill or died were released by those who in fact know the details. The fact that this region of Italy is heavily populated with Chinese immigrants and Asian workers is never mentioned in these stories. Too bad telling the truth is so politically incorrect.
The Daily Mail in England has it on their website for Italy situation. Old people dying...
people are old in Italy, the reason for high deaths.
people are old in Italy, the reason for high deaths.
Some of that information is tracked here, but its 13 pages of news and data if you want to wade through
Hopefully, there will be data gathered and lessons learned
so that other nations don’t reach these figures.
And also because many people who live in Italy are from China..they brought it there
[Daily Mail reports so many deaths in Italy BECAUSE older age population.]
At some point Trump is going to have to lockdown Massachusetts and California.
Per the CDC chart below, I've got a 4% chance of dying from it.
So I've got a 0.7 x 0.04 = 3% chance of dying from it.
EXCEPT I've had serious bronchitis issues after colds for decades and what looked like a bout of pneumonia last winter after a cold and bronchitis.
Maybe I should just sign off now and say "It's been nice knowing you all!"
At some point, everyone will have been exposed to it, those who will get seriously sick will have gotten sick, and those who will die, will have died.
At that point, the death rate will start going down, and we will see what the true mortality rate is.
“it would be immensely useful if the race, age, and the underlying medical conditions”
Well, we do know they are the predominately elderly, that has been made clear.
” heavily populated with Chinese immigrants and Asian workers”
Elderly Chinese workers make up a big part of the Italian population?
Bull. You need to update your theory.
At this point, your cut-and-paste bit not only makes you look ignorant, but Lazy.
A doctor in Italy has written that if you have diabetes or some other conditions, they don’t even try to save you even if you are young and otherwise healthy. Not because they consider you likely to die but more because they are trying to conserve resources. Probably many of whatever number of young people who’ve died could have been saved if not for that approach.
But the presence of the Chinese workers may go a long way to explain the high numbers of cases in Italy even if it's ethnic Italians contracting it.
Perhaps you can inform us why the CDC and the WHO which has the data is not releasing it. Do share your wise insights with us “ignorant and lazy” observers. Will eagerly await your enlightening response.
