I think this is the difference between SK and Italy.

SK tested everybody and quarantined everyone with a positive. Eliminating transmission chains in the process and (it looks like) cut the top off the peak. We hope for them anyways.

Italy turned into a raging dumpster fire because they didn’t mimic SK and start testing everyone as soon as they found a few positives. Contact tracing and quarantining even those with mild or no symptoms became impossible in Italy.

I hope we don’t mimic Italy.

Singapore was on the ball. Still are. Helped I’m sure by the warm weather which ameliorates fomites outside.

Who could have seen that coming? ;-)

China is in such deep trouble—they have a long long way to go on this thing...

ITALY

Gallera: 644 intensive care places for covid. Renew appeal to responsible behavior

“Today we have 644 places in our intensive care available for coronavirus patients. We added 223 to the 723 that were at the beginning, reaching 946. And in the next few days we will open another 150/200 “.

The councilor for Welfare of the Lombardy Region, Giulio Gallera, said during the press conference convened to take stock of the Coronavirus situation.

“Since the emergency began - he explained - intensive care has managed 778 patients and 103 discharged, 80 have died. 25% of the patients are no longer in TI, and today we are trying to rotate as much as possible patients, identifying other structures that can accommodate less serious patients. We think of hotel structures or larger spaces like those of the fair. It is also under consideration the possibility of using socio-sanitary facilities for intermediate treatments so as to lighten hospital settings and open spaces for intensive care and find spaces like Cuasso al Monte or Sondalo (100 places). The survey on structures like that of Bollate for the sub-intensive also goes on, thus expanding our reception capacity to the maximum “.

And then the strong appeal to keep and spread virtuous behavior. “Abscesses of contagious growth must be stopped - he said - and therefore we re-launch to observe even more scrupulously the indications. We can see the results within 7/10 days, so with the president we shared the need to put in even stronger measures “.

“Do you see the stupid in your posts?”

No, but I can sure see it in yours.

Pro tip: don’t stick your nose in a discussion you don’t understand. Black Agnes knew exactly what I was saying.

You’re just blathering incoherently.

The Second Wave to hit China is going to make the first one look like nothing. That’s what we’d really need to be prepared for.

No school that gets money from them (and that would be all the top schools) is going to DARE speak out against them in any ways. They like getting paid. They like paying mortgages, car notes and having those nice new buildings on campus to show off.

Big ed is a HUGE bubble. If chicoms stop paying for some reason it will pop many of the big schools bubbles.

You can also add the American College of Physicians Internal Medicine meeting was cancelled today. I work for the Idaho chapter of ACP and am quite thankful to not be heading into LA next month for this. Thousands of doctors attend this meeting every year. This is the first time they have ever cancelled it.

So presumably the gym is still open so lots of new people are still being infected by touching the equipment there...

After Xi’s appearance in Wuhan yesterday... I’m surprised China reported ANY new cases today.

Looking at twitter sources it might be just starting. I will have to watch the firewall leaks to twitter over the next couple of days.

I’m wondering if the admin policy is ‘bandaid off quickly’ with respect to this virus.

Get it over with.

we basically become immune and don’t need treatments (which may be dodgy since they’re all MIC it seems) or vaccines (ditto MIC or made from MIC products).

I follow Jennifer Zeng on twitter and some of her commenters think the reason Xi (or his body double) appeared in Hubei today was to show the peasants it was safe to go back to work now. That it had to be said and they had to be shown indicates an underlying unwillingness to do so on the part of the peasants.

AFRICA

By Brinkwire on March 11, 2020
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia

The number of coronavirus cases in Africa has reached 102 confirmed with one death, said the African Union’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

This came in an update Africa CDC head Dr. John Nkengasong gave to reporters at the African Union headquarters on Tuesday.

COVID-19 hit a number of northern, western and southern African countries since a first case was confirmed in Egypt on Feb. 14.

“As of today, there are about 102 cases in 10 African countries, with one death,” Nkengasong said, listing the affected countries as Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Togo and Tunisia.

Describing some of the activities of Africa CDC, Nkengasong said: “Africa CDC has distributed testing kits capable of testing over 10,000 people, purchasing more emergency medical items including test kits, thermal scanners and other critical medical supplies and stockpiling them to meet the requests from member states.”

Comment: Well, there is a death in Africa now, so I’m guess the WHO will declare a pandemic tomorrow.

I have to wonder if there is other stuff going on besides the virus that has them scared.

I am having a hard time attributing the seeming inaction to malice or incompetence.

I skimmed it. Sounded pretty gloomy except for this:

“To date, patients with severe disease are most all (excepting those whose families didn’t sign consent) getting Remdesivir from Gilead through compassionate use. However, the expectation is that avenue for getting the drug will likely close shortly. It will be expected that patients would have to enroll in either...”

I predict that the Admistration will provide Remdesivir to all who need it, depending on availability.

We are mimicking Italy—exactly.

Imho we are so far along that there is no way to stop us from getting to where Italy is now. The only question is whether it will take us two or three weeks to get there.

The reason is that it takes time to ramp up quarantine facilities (including health care facilities). In addition it looks like our testing is toast (not just _was_ toast, but _is_ toast and _will be_ toast) and is virtually irrelevant.

The only options left are banning gatherings, then quarantines, but without major testing you are flying blind.

At this point I can’t think of any reason we won’t be worse than Italy.

The testing situation is going to create an impossible situation.
