Coronavirus may have our attention lately, but doctors are reminding parents of another respiratory illness that affects babies and young children each year: RSV. At just 7 months old, life has been a real adventure for Piper Cullison so far. Piper spent her first three months in the hospital. Then, just when mom and dad thought they were home free, she caught a cold. She just definitely started getting congested, and kind of wheezing a little bit more than normal.
Soon, Piper was fighting for every breath. She went back in the hospital, where she was diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.

I've been battling RSV for 3 weeks. Not fun.
Posted just in case the Coronavirus didn't give you enough to worry about.
I had RSV in mid-January.
Endless coughing, eventually I was blowing my nose nonstop.
It lasted 3 - 4 weeks.
My elderly mother caught it and ended up in the hospital for 16 days.
She is recuperating at home now is virus free.
I had whooping cough a few years ago and it was not fun. Took forever to get over...and my lungs have not been the same.
Didnt we get vaccinated for that as a kid or do you have to get a booster shot?
My twins almost died of RSV when they were 6 weeks old. One has a brain injury from it. The other one has severe asthma from it.
I’m worried about Corona virus because I know what respiratory viruses can do. At least for RSV, there are some treatments for it now.
I will have to check. I’m early 50’s and don’t remember that one. Only MMR, Polio, Diphtheria.
I had to get a tetanus shot. I wanted just Tetanus but pretty sure I had to get one that included Pertussis. (whooping cough)
I Probaby should check that out to see which one I got.
They might not have done it in the 70s
Yeah, good idea.
In the 70s i remember as a child to get a set of booster shot for I don’t recall for what. I had a tetanus shot with pertussis just last year. Keep reminding me I need the shingles shot, but not 60 yet.
I didnt know you had to be 60 to get the shingles shot.
I am going to do that one since I don’t handle pain well. Diverticulitis pain was the worst pain of my life. Shingles might be worse.
You don’t have to be sixty. I had shingles at 16, immune suppressed, and was vaxxed when I was in my twenties.
So painwise how do you rate Shingles compared to whatever else pain you have had in your life.
The #1 Shingrix shot made me feel really sick but only for 5 days. The #2 shot was much less of a problem. Now my sister in law has shingles and has been in agony for weeks. So I’m feeling the tradeoff was ok.
One conspicuous feature of the Covid-19 virus is that children don’t seem to be catching it.
Or if they are, they aren’t displaying any symptom. Which would make them ideal spreaders of the disease.
Several countries, including India, Saudi Arabia and Italy, have already closed their school systems.
“The whooping cough vaccine you receive as a child eventually wears off. This leaves most teenagers and adults susceptible to the infection during an outbreak and there continue to be regular outbreaks.” - Mayo Clinic

My son had it as an infant. It’s bad stuff
Shingrix, the two-dose vaccine, is approved for age 50 and up. Some insurance may not pay for it before age 60 so you might want to check first.
This vaccine is supposed to be 90% effective. Shingles is very painful, the pain can continue after the outbreak has cleared, you can get shingles more than once, and you can get it anywhere on your body.
We had an elderly neighbor when I was a teenager who had it two or more times. I’ve been convinced ever since that I don’t want it.
The day after the first shot I didn’t feel great. The day after the second one, I felt pretty awful- like I had the flu. It only lasted 24 hours, I was OK the next day. I figure it’s worth one day of feeling sick to avoid weeks of misery.
My older brother hated needles. He had a co-worker out of work for around 3 months with shingles on his head and face that affected his eyesight. My brother went and got the shot.
From what I’ve been told, shingles, kidney stones, and gout are all up there pretty high on the pain and misery scale. Shingles probably lasts longer, at least as far as pain is concerned.
I plan to post this several times. I used this several times after getting what seemed like a flue, and it seemed to kick it out.
This video is of the testimony of a survivor of the 1918 flue epidemic, which hit every single family in her town, except her family. She tells of her mothers simple preventative measure she used to keep the family flue free, which she thinks did work.
Her family not only survived without getting the flue, they were able to minister to the entire town.
You can skip to the time stamp to just hear the preventative measure, or you can listen to the whole video, which is short and very interesting.
If you appreciate her mothers preventative measure please spread the word. It is extremely cheap and though it may keep one from getting the flu, it certainly wont hurt to try it.
