As you may or may not know, I only really started taking care of the diabetes in 2017, though I was diagnosed in 2010. Even then, my control has been kinda bad. I sometimes see a blood sugar near 300, but I am getting better.
Some of my neglect has caught up with me.
Friday morning, I noticed I was seeing double when driving. I went to the doctor for a previous appointment, unrelated to this. I didnt bother to mention this issue because it came and went, and I figured it was just eye strain or something.
Well, it got worse Saturday. My optometrist is open on Saturday, at 11AM, but I ended up calling the on-call doctor (they say to call if it is an ocular emergency. I figured this was close enough to an emergency.
So I got in touch with him, and he told me to come in right at 11AM, and that he would bump his previous persons appointment, because this is serious. I came in, he looked me over (retinas, eye movement, prescription change). When he got done he told me what has likely happened is that one or two of the 6 major nerves, or a blood vessel feeding one of the eye muscles had either a stenosis (narrowing) or aneurysm (swelling). He would be concerned if is is an aneurysm, so wed want me to get to my normal doctor)first thing on Monday in an emergency basis, and at his recommendation, to order a scan (CT or MRI) using angiogram / radioactive fluids so they can see whats going on it there. So I will need to do these things to maybe get my eyes back to normal function.
There is a bit of good news the optomologist said the prognosis for a recovery in weeks or months is pretty good, because my pupil function was perfectly okay. He told me the body will come up with new blood vessels to feed the nerve and the muscle that is in a state of palsy, and that if there is nerve damage, even that can be repaired. If it does not work out, that there are surgeries possible to repair things. Not sure that is a great option, I dont see how they could correct that.
The level of double vision is extreme when I am driving, but near-in looking at a computer screen seems to be okay. If that deteriorates, I should be able to keep going by wearing an eye patch and using one eye.
Needless to say, I am terrified. The one thing I do not want to lose is my sight.
Get er done Laz in God’s name Amen
Wishing all the best to one of my best, long time, free republic buddies!
I wish you well. I remember the Y2K times.
Praying from here.
Prayers up, Laz, but I’m confident that you’ve got a handle on this. You’ve identified the problem...go get ‘em Laz!
From the sound of the doctor’s description of avenues for fixing things you will be okay. He didn’t shake his head and tell you nothing could ever be done. That means stop worrying.
They have operations now that didn’t exist a long time ago.
I know it’s easy to say and I’m the first one to panic, but this sounds hopeful.
Make sure you can see a good ophthalmologist. My wife and I are thankful for ours in MI. Other eye doctors are not as specialized.
May I gently suggest that you work on fighting the diabetes? My wife and I are among the 33 million or more that have it. Please take care of yourself. No offense. We need you in top condition on FR.
Prayers up for your speedy recovery.

Take it from a guy whose had five eye surgeries if they say they can fix it they can, and all my surgeries were VA. If the VA can do the miracles I’m familiar with then any eye surgical professional can.
Im with ya brother. Prayers up!
Prayers up. It was good you got things checked promptly. Keep us posted.
Prayers up.
Prayers, Laz. But the eye problem shouldnt hamper your extra-curricular activities, should it?
The best to you, Buddy! You can do it! We are all pulling for you.
One more reason to take care of it now before things get worse... Then take your medicine like you’re suppose to... and many prayers for you Laz... Let us know what’s happening when you get more details... keep us posted. You matter.
Dear Laz, youve been in my prayers and will continue to be, even more than before.
You have no choice except to fix this because every FR needs its Lazamataz, and youre our only one.
:-)
Prayers up!
