People who brush their teeth three times a day or more are less likely to develop diabetes, research suggests.
A study looked at the oral hygiene of almost 190,000 people from South Korea between 2003 and 2006.
After an average follow-up time of 10 years, 16 per cent had developed diabetes. A similar number had suffered gum disease.
Those under the age of 51 who brushed their teeth more than the recommended twice a day had a 14 per cent lower risk of diabetes.
Researchers said inflammation plays a crucial role in the development of diabetes, a condition more than five million people will have the UK by 2025.
Gum disease has been linked to many health complications, including stroke and heart disease. But the reasons are not so clear.

So all I have to do is brush a couple of dozen times per day, and I can get the risk down to nearly 0!
I only brush in the morning and before bed, but I floss several times a day. I can't stand having anything stuck in my teeth.
How about people who are fastidious are much less likely to become obese.
So could getting a haircut once a month.
Is it truly the brushing of the teeth, or is the 3-times-a-day brushing habit part of whole set of behaviors that the persons with that habit do, such as avoiding carbonated surgery drinks & candy bars, not frequenting the “fast food” chains very much, not eating too much carbs, getting enough physical activity and like behaviors that help avoid both obesity & diabetes??
Unless a study controls for the matching of other variables such as the kind of items that I just mentioned, the teeth brushing is only a corollary finding, not a “cause” of the reduced diabetes.
Exactly how does brushing teeth three times a day negate dumping a bunch of sugar into your system or not exercising to burn it off?
True. It could be that frequent brushers are more disciplined eaters.
