Fisherman breaks state record with monster 37-pound lake trout [NH]

Thomas Knight with the enormous lake trout that broke New Hampshire's 62-year-old state record for the largest lake trout.

(CNN)When Thomas Knight set out on the ice to go fishing for lake trout, he was determined to haul in a big one. He came prepared with an 11-inch sucker because big bait attracts big fish, he said. But what he reeled in was bigger than anything he could have imagined. Knight, of Meredith, New Hampshire, caught a lake trout last Tuesday that weighed in at 37.65 pounds, easily breaking the state record that was more than 60 years old. The previous record was 28 pounds set in 1958. Usually, records are broken by a couple ounces, but Knight's fish shattered the record by more than nine pounds.

And before he even reeled it in, he knew it was going to be massive. "The line was so tight, it got so thin and the adrenaline was full blown," Knight told CNN. "You just do everything you can to not break the line and you try to tire the fish out." Thomas Knight, right, holds his 37.65 pound lake trout.

I’m guessing Lake Winnipesaukee.

FWIW, Mittens has/had a Summer house there.

You no longer have to kill a fish to get a mount. You just take a few measurements and photos and send them to Gray's Taxidermy in S. Florida. You'll get a fiberglass reproduction that lasts forever while releasing the fish to continue on.

The carcasses of record fish do need to be turned in to be made official. There are however, a ton of anecdotes (with photos) here in FL where captains have released potential record fishes to help maintain the fishery.

I’m guessing Lake Winnipesaukee.

Yeah, doesn't say.

The picture shows the shoreline pretty close. Might be a smaller lake.

They're keeping it on the lowdown, where ever it was caught.

[[Question: Are Trout good to eat when they get that large?]]

Yes- it’s a soft flaky flesh no mtter the size really- the only time they aren’t good to eat is when they are spawning- the flesh becomes very mushy- (well at least with salmon- when they undergo that weird change)

[[Or are you better off just having it stuffed and mounted for wall art?]]

A fish that size I’d definitely have it on wall- but i think you can get the meat from it too- they take the flesh out- and stuff it with foam i believe-

It’s ice fishing. Does LW freeze over? Or perhaps the photo op was not where the fish was caught???

“Perhaps you should read the first line of the article.”

It says he was ice fishing, so he probably was trolling from a snowmobile.
