New Yorkers rankled on first day of statewide plastic-bag ban

Here’s where you can stuff your plastic-bag ban.

New Yorkers were forced to begin grappling with a new shopping reality Sunday as the state’s ban on plastic shopping bags kicked in — and not many people were happy about it.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” letter-carrier Scott Kimmel, 56, said while shopping at the Whitestone Target in College Point, Queens. “I understand about ‘conserve, take care of the environment,’ but c’mon!”

About half the shoppers seen by The Post on the first day of the bag ban, including Kimmel, were compensating by bringing their own bags from home, while another quarter opted to just go bagless rather than pay the 5-cent paper-bag fee allowed under the law, and the remaining 25 percent coughed up the nickel charge per bag.

“I was totally shocked,” Target shopper Richie Alvarez, 49, said of the move. “This is what our world is coming to. Yeah, they charged me extra for the bag. That’s why I only took one. It would normally be two or three bags.”

The law, passed by state lawmakers last year, bars single-use plastic bags at any retailer — from supermarkets to bodegas — that collects sales tax at their store.

It allows shoppers to bring bags from home, buy a reusable bag at the store, or pay the 5-cent fee for paper bags.

Although it went into effect Sunday, state officials said they won’t bring the hammer down on retailers who ignore the law until April, when fines could start to kick in.

“People don’t want to hear this,” said the manager of C-Town Supermarket on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, who only identified himself as Henry. “They’re not happy. At least I have a month to break them in. We’re trying to get cheap mesh bags for them. We’ll see.”

Did you see the description? We’ll be using plastic bags still; they’re just better, and called “multiple use”.

The plastic pollution in the oceans is not caused by the U.S. It is caused by plastic reprocessing centers dumping their excess plastic in the ocean. We should reprocess our recycled plastic in the U.S. rather than rely on outsourced recyclers mishandling plastic because of no regulations in these countries.

Didn’t China stop taking our recyclables because their rising wages made it uneconomic to process the stuff? I’ve read a lot of the US stuff is going right to the landfills now.

Simply put your paid groceries in the cart and roll them out to your car. Have boxes in the trunk and organize everything neatly for carrying into the house.

I was out to Sacramento a few weeks ago. Went to a Sprouts grocery store. They asked paper or plastic as I was getting checked out. They bagged my groceries and offered two types of bags. I was shocked, didn’t expect that in crazy CA.

But if they banned all plastic from grocery stores you’d have a bunch of empty shelves.

Yes. China stopped taking plastic from all the countries and that diverted it to other countries who caused much of the problems of ocean pollution. By the way, the U.S. is the lowest country for ocean pollution. So why are they acting like we have a problem?

Sadly when I was in Florida last month it seemed like all the restaurants were using those lame paper straws.

You should see all the plastic thrown out into the dumpster used for shrink wrapping those pallets of produce. It would blow your mind.

“Tests have shown that the reusable bags are absolutely laden with bacteria”

I’ve seen far too many disgusting liberal pigs with their nasty, dirty, smelly reusable bags at the grocery store. I told one pig to get her disgusting bags off the counter they were beyond caked in dirt.

No offense taken PH. Trust me, I know what you’re going through. Up here in Northern California, we have one State Senator to represent 11 counties and maybe 5 Assemblymen whereas LA County alone has 11 Senators and some 23 Assemblymen. They’re always passing crap that we have to deal with. Sometimes they pass crap like the Fire Tax that ONLY applies to us while preventing us from managing our forests.

The bag applies to all biz that collects sales tax. The only exceptions are bags for meds, meat, produce.

The bag tax is not in effect in all counties, but in counties it’s not in foce, some biz are charging anyway. One biz I’m familiar with is making charitable donations with the money, so they likely get a tax deduction with money taken from consumers.

BTW, not everyone gets charged the bag tax. EBT card users, for example, don’t have to pay.

Yea aren’t plastic garbage bags single use?
Just throw all of your trash (often wrapped in plastic) out onto the street.

Believe it or not here in super leftie MA most supermarkets put the groceries in a paper bag then place that bag inside a plastic one.
Pretty good deal, double the strength and you have carrying handles to bring them in side.
I wonder how much longer that will last...
