Trump campaign sues The New York Times for libel over Russia opinion article

Key Points
  • President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign sued The New York Times for libel over a 2019 opinion piece.
  • The campaign is seeking millions of dollars in damages for what it claimed was The Times’ false claims that the Trump campaign had “a conspiracy with Russia” during the 2016 election.
  • The Manhattan Supreme Court suit claims the newspaper intended to hurt Trump’s chances of reelection in 2020.

President Donald Trump’s campaign sued The New York Times for libel over a March 2019 opinion article, saying the newspaper published its allegedly false claims with the “intentional purpose” of damaging Trump’s chances for reelection this year.

The campaign, which is seeking millions of dollars in damages, said The Times falsely reported “as fact a conspiracy with Russia” in the op-ed written by Max Frankel, which was published on March 27, 2019 under the headline “The Real Trump-Russia Quid Pro Quo.”

Frankel is a former executive editor of the newspaper.

The Times had no immediate comment on the lawsuit, which was filed in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Reached at his home, Frankel declined to comment.

“No, I’m going to leave that to The Times,” he said.

Among other things, the suit alleges that the newspaper “has engaged in a systematic pattern of bias” against Trump’s campaign, which is designed to damage the campaign’s reputation and cause it to fail.

This is good. We need more of this. The media should not be able to lie with impunity.

After the election, the NYT announced they were no longer fact based, but were an anti-Trump advocate dedicated to his removal.

Exhibit A

Machiavelli observed that “false accusations are most often employed where there are few public indictments and wherever cities are less well organized to receive them.” Constitutions of government must allow public charges against any citizen, done without fear, and without respect to the accused’s rank or position. Alternatively, false accusers must suffer because great disorders follow unanswered whisper campaigns.

Crush President Trump's Hearsay Accusers.

Every citizen in the US has recourse in the LAW to address this kind of thing.

Good!

If the ‘media’ recognizes what their sloppy, fraudulent and intentionally damaging ‘news’ is going to cost them... maybe they’ll return to ‘journalism’ as it’s ethically done. Maybe THEN people will respect them and actually listen to them.

As it is, who actually believes them at this point?

Love it, let’s hope for some justice and a guilty verdict and a hefty fine.

Plus a full front-page retraction and apology.

I support Trump 100% but could they also claim that the President of the United States unfairly called them the failing New York Times and fake news to intentionally hurt their business?
Trump should keep calling them that because he isn’t lying about them so it’s not libel.

He’s got a high bar to jump. As public a figure as he is, he has to prove actual malice or willful disregard for truth. While we all know that both of those elements define the Slimes, proving it is next to impossible.

Indoctrinate = Indoctrinated.

Plus there are the naive who believe if they see it on TV, it must be true. Why would CBSABCNBC, CNN, MSNBC and the various print media lie to them?

There are just too many of the MSM to all being lying, spinning, parsing, distorting. Kinda makes sense, unless a person has a logical and reasoning mind and the slightest knowledge of history.

Then there are the antifa and greenie anarchists types who just hate everything associated with the greatest society this Rock has ever seen. This and my earlier post above is why "Bernie the Commie" has so much support.

I would target the individual. Plenty of biased bastards on MSNBC and CNN. Mark Levin could make a fortune given the task. 👍

On top of that, New York courts hold that anything labelled "editorial or "opinion" is almost always libel-proof.
