I love Rush but he has stated several time today that the death rate of Corona virus is LESS than the death rate of influenza. This is just flat out wrong.
From the CDC website
Mortality rate of influenza: Deaths per 100,000 population: 2.
So the CDC says that for every 100,000 people that get the flu, 2 of them will die from it. What is the mortality rate percentage?:
2 (the number of deaths) divided by 100,000 = .00002, or .002%.
The estimated mortality rate of corona (which he is basing on the number out of China = 2-3%.
Death rate of flu= .002%
Death rate of Corona = 2%
The death rate of corona is a THOUSAND times greater than the flu...and that's assuming that we used Chinese numbers. Using IRAN number the death rate is 15%...
Rush MIGHT be referring to the fact that the flu can kill up to 80,000 americans in a year. But that's only because there's a LOT more people infected with various flu viruses. When as many people are infected by the corona virus then there would be an accurate comparison.

The death rate for the 1918 Spanish flu was only 1.7%.
I have a “wait and see” attitude about this.
How many on the Japanese cruise ship died? How many of the 14 infected Americans brought back have died? My understanding is that none of them have died. We’ll see.

Koreans are descended from Han Chinese and Japan are closely related and Iran is just close. In any sizable group, there will be people who have genetic markers that are similar to other groups.
It’s possible that the reason why it’s infecting the rest of the world at a slower rate is because the most virulent aspects of this viruses have been contained by the trading of genetic information.
I don’t see it as a problem for myself to be worried about.

I'm not talking about TOTAL DEATHS and neither was Rush. Rush kept saying the DEATH RATE. This is demonstrably false. At the worst (the 1918 Spanish Flu) the death rate was ONLY 1.7% worldwide.
My primary caution on deriving ANY conclusions is that the comparable death rate from Corona virus in the US is frankly unknown (not enough cases to make a statistically significant guess.) Regardless, however, the Corona Virus death rate is highly likely to be significantly less that the world-wide rate primarily because of the state of medical care in the US (best in the world.)
So Rush may be right ... or he may be wrong on the death rate; but he is right that the problem in the US is not the virus, it is the way the media are using it to undermine our President.

The last I heard there were 4 deaths of the infected passengers. None of the dead were Americans.
I misread by source about the Spanish flu. IT killed 2% to 3% of those infected. But that was the worst flu EVER. The normal mortality flu rate is much lower.

Rush is wrong, I believe, but not by the tally that Doug states. It defies common sense to believe that if 100,000 people get the flu, only TWO will die.
The normal worldwide mortality rate is less than 1% for influenza. The 1918 Spanish flu killed 2% to 3% of the infected worldwide and that was when healthcare was a lot worse than it is now.
