I love Rush but he has stated several time today that the death rate of Corona virus is LESS than the death rate of influenza. This is just flat out wrong.
From the CDC website
Mortality rate of influenza: Deaths per 100,000 population: 2.
So the CDC says that for every 100,000 people that get the flu, 2 of them will die from it. What is the mortality rate percentage?:
2 (the number of deaths) divided by 100,000 = .00002, or .002%.
The estimated mortality rate of corona (which he is basing on the number out of China = 2-3%.
Death rate of flu= .002%
Death rate of Corona = 2%
The death rate of corona is a THOUSAND times greater than the flu...and that's assuming that we used Chinese numbers. Using IRAN number the death rate is 15%...
Rush MIGHT be referring to the fact that the flu can kill up to 80,000 americans in a year. But that's only because there's a LOT more people infected with various flu viruses. When as many people are infected by the corona virus then there would be an accurate comparison.

I only know of 3. All were Japanese in their 80s. If there was a 4th I haven’t seen that bit of info yet.
There is also a very promising drug in Human Trails (less than 3 weeks left) now that might cut the mortality rate way down.
Nobody knows a thing based on Chinese “statistics.” They lie about everything. Maybe they’re minimizing it, maybe they’re exaggerating it, who knows?
From what we have seen among Europeans or non-Asians who have gotten it, it seems to be about average flu death rate (about 2%, mostly among elderly people or people who have a history of some sort of lung or heart problems. It appears to be quite contagious, but it’s hard to say if it’s more contagious than any flu...a lot of people here have gotten flu vaccines, although apparently one of the flus for which they were vaccinated turned out not to be the flu that actually occurred...so it’s even hard to know that statistic.
Also, it does appear to hit Asians harder. I read that they have receptors in their lungs that much of the non-Asian population does not have, and the virus appears to have tailored itself to that, which is logical in virus-terms. That said, viruses mutate like mad to adapt themselves to the host, so this may not be a guarantee.
Still, panic is neither necessary nor helpful, and I get very suspicious when I see the hysteria mongers out there. It’s reasonable to worry a bit - I’m older and have had lung problems, so I’d probably be a prime target - but there’s nothing we can do except take reasonable precautions and hope they come up with a vaccine sooner rather than later.
Okay to the math:
35,500,000 get the flu.
34,200 die from the flu.
34,200 divided by 35,500,000 = .00096 = .096%. So LESS than 1% die. Rush is claiming that the mortality rate for the flu is "much higher" than 2 or 3 percent.
The flu is endemic throughout the world. The corona virus is not, so far.

That's the bottom line and that is what governments fear. This is a NEW virus. There IS no immunity. Sure some wont get sick. Some will get a little sick. Some will die. But they are not sure WHAT the virus will do. Will it mutate? Will it break off into different strains like influenza?

It might be a little now, but like I said they might have a treatment (already for SARS and Ebola) that would reduce the mortality rate under the flu. The treatment has been very effective.
The highest rate using solid data in industrial society is 1%, but if you look below it is less than 1% (.4% & .5% respectively).

This virus attacks the lungs vigorously - I heard as far as China is concerned, 51% or 52% of the males smoke cigarettes and only 3% of females in China smoke cigarettes. That was a study done there as to why so many more males than females died.

You have to compare apples to app!es. Either compare case fatality rates OR compare deaths per population. Both are valuable information, but they measure different parameters.
