Indianapolis will be the center of the NFL universe this week with the 2020 NFL scouting combine. But by the time the 2020 NFL draft arrives in Las Vegas, the center of power will actually be several time zones away in Miami.
The Miami Dolphins are this years power brokers in the draft, armed with a trove of high picks both this year and next. And before we even arrive at the draft, theres free agency, where the Dolphins are as well-positioned (with around $90 million in salary cap space) as any of the 32 teams to make a splash.
The Dolphins own three picks in Round 1 Nos. 5, 18 and 26 overall. They also have two more in Round 2, giving them five of the first 70 overall selections. They currently own five more picks in Rounds 5 through 7, and are expected to earn at least one fourth-round compensatory pick, plus a later selection, that will be allocated later this month.

What do they need the most?
Please don’t say everything :)
Running Back.
“I haven’t watched the THUG NFL league in years and don’t intend to”
There, I took care of that. Now, let’s discuss....
The fish do need lots. QB has got to be the priority. When was the last time they had stability at that position? Chad Pennington? Marino?
Then the O line. They have decent, though unknown wideouts and RBs can be found at all levels of the draft.
After that: Edge Rusher. DBs and LBs can be added through the draft.
My layman’s draft philosophy is invest draft capital in QBs, and dudes to protect the QB and sack the QB.
I stopped reading where it said “several time zones away in Miami.” Indianapolis and Miami are both in the Eastern Time Zone, for crying out loud!
Does the author of this article live on the Left Coast?
After the Kansas City Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in 50 years, that put the Dolphins at the second longest current streak between Super Bowl titles with 46 years since their back to back wins in 1972 and 1973 (against Minnesota in Super Bowl VIII). The longest still belongs to the New York Jets who have yet to win another Super Bowl since their victory in Super Bowl III (1968 season against Baltimore Colts in January 1969).
Looked this article wondering if it was important. It wasn’t. Apparently the NFL is still the NFL.
Offensive lineman, Pass Rusher, Quarterback (not for year, but they are going big here), and Running Back.
I think they should be the best lineman or pass rusher before a quarter back (they have three first round picks). There are at least four/five suitable quarterbacks available in the first round). As always plenty of good running backs in the later rounds.
Their running game was such a mess last season. I really dont want to draft a QB this year. Fitzpatrick can start again next year, and they can get one next year.
Get 2 lineman and a rb who is good at blocking.
That’s the game today. D Backs can be “Ok” if the other QB is running around like a lunatic. Likewise, if your QB is safe, and your “average” RB can run behind a good line, you’ll win 80% of the time.
It’s amazing so many teams screw this up.
The O-line is key to victory. A QB, RB, WR can’t do much if the QB is running for his life.
Get a decent defense, and then you have a shot.
“What do they need the most?
Please dont say everything :)”
Okay, I won’t say it but.....
(I did a quick check of the Miami stats. Not good)
Start with the offensive line, the foundation of the offense.
QB’s can’t throw completions if they’re running for their lives.
Receivers can’t complete routes to get open when the QB is running for his life.
Running backs can’t stack up yards and first downs if the line doesn’t open holes to run through.
Draft or trade for an offensive line that can pass block and run block. If you have that a journeyman QB, RB and a couple of capable receivers will get you a winning season offensively.
Other side of the ball again start with the defensive line. You want maneaters. Hungry, hungry maneaters.
They need to be able to play the run and the pass equally well. Interior linemen should be the type who can penetrate and tackle the RB for a loss or put pressure on the QB. DE’s should fit the same mold. Run or pass.
With the right defensive line you can take pressure off the DB’s and LB’s by stopping the RB at the line or pressuring the QB into making bad throws.
Get your lines set then draft or trade for that big name QB, RB or WR. Drafting the QB, RB first will get you a marquee name that will suck up money against the cap and will suffer injuries and not be as effective.
Once you have your linemen look at the other positions and see if any cheap help is available.
Most importantly, coach the team you have not the one you wish you had.
Work within the strengths of the players you have.
Just my two cents.
The “several time zones” comment refers to Las Vegas, where the draft will be held, and Miami.
