Coronavirus Live Thread. Live Thread 1
2/23/2020

Posted on 02/23/2020 1:57:16 PM PST by Vermont Lt

Figured we would start numbering the threads.

Some points to keep in mind:

1. This thing is not “just the flu.” 2. 1/10th of the worlds population is in some sort of lockdown. 3. Generally, we don’t buy the Chinese numbers But if anything they are low. 4. Everyone is welcome to post, but don’t bore us with your “you are panicking” posts. They are tedious.

It’s Sunday night and the Walking Dead is back. Let’s talk Coronavirus.

IDK. Haven’t seen it yet. And I think we should have if China is that much of a bottleneck.

There’s been a lot of advance towards other suppliers because of the “trade war”.
Maybe China still has that pull, maybe it doesn’t.

What is really surprising is that there have been no documented outbreaks to date. Clearly until very recently thousands of people travelled from Wusan to multiple points in the US. It is very likely some of these people were symptomatic or asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19. Yet no outbreaks to date. Why? Is genetic susceptibility the key factor? Are the cases in Iran and Italy given the relative non availability of reliable specific diagnostic testing really COVID-19 infections? Still do not have enough information to determine if a true pandemic will occur.

Turn that around. The number of Chinese travelers from Hubei to the US was only a very tiny fraction of Hubei's population. Unless the Chinese numbers were literally off by 2 orders of magnitude or more, as of the time that travel from Hubei was chopped, the % of those in Hubei Province who were infected was also a very tiny fraction of that population. This gets us into literally only a handful or less people coming into the US from Hubei as potentially infectious carriers -- and I'll bet a few of the cases caught here were related to Hubei in some way.

Reminder: As of today (Feb 23), the US remains extremely limited in #COVID19 testing. Only 3 of ~100 public health labs have

test kits working and CDC is not sharing what went wrong with the kits. How to know if COVID19 is spreading here if we are not looking for it. 1/7

Whoa!
Iran losing friends fast.

Still looking to the effect on Iran’s proxies. It will be ‘very big deal’.

My experience (300+ employee company) was that particularly just after CNY, 60 days from shipment from China to actually putting parts on the production line was not unusual. Might be different for the big players, IDK. We allowed for it.

I guess the question right now might be: How is daily import activity at US ports?

Also, a lot of Chinese factories producing “simple” component parts are highly automated.* They might not be too affected until or if the maint. staff is needed and doesn’t show up — but it looks like now some regions are going back to work, virus or no. We’ll see how that holds up...

*We tend to think of these Chinese factories as populated with hordes of sweatshop employees working on dirt floors, but, truth is, some of those factories are nothing of the sort, and, damn impressive.

Anyway, I would expect supply chain problems to develop a bit more gradually & sporadically than some would think. April could be “interesting”. After that, warmer weather should help. A lot depends on whether the vendor countries just decide to work and accept their human losses. After all, staying shut down might cost more lives than the virus, eventually...

Due to the liberal policies of Australian government on the #coronavirus, Israel imposed entry ban on Australian visitors for an indefinite period of time. Israeli Health Minister called Mr Morrison’s decision to open borders to Chinese students, "shortsighted" & "reckless".

Great reply, thanks.

But does China have control over supplies sufficient to stop production for a whole ‘class’ of production?
Yeah, a specific company could be subject to their whim. But a whole field of production?
Sorry that I’m not being clearer.

When I consider how much junk and stuff most people own, we should be able to manage quite well by not buying from China for a while.

It’s time to learn to be resourceful and fix things and improvise again.

Garage sales are great places to find good slightly or never used things. If we could just et over our *Gotta have the latest and greatest* fetish.
