Chinese media reports that two senior officials in Hubei Province – party secretary of the Health Commission of Hubei Province, Zhang Jin and the director of the Hubei Provincial Health Commission, Liu Yingzi – have been fired.

February 21 – The Chinese mainland has reported 889 new cases, with 75,465 confirmed cases, 5,206 suspected cases, and 2,236 deaths in total (as of midnight February 20), according to China’s National Health Commission.
February 20 – The Hubei provincial government announced to postpone the restart of businesses to March 11, 2020. The epidemic prevention and control headquarter of Hubei said the situation remains tense despite a drop in daily reports of new infections in the province. We provide the most updated map tracking factory/office re-opening across China here.

What are the key economic impacts of the coronavirus on China’s economy? How can I successfully manage my Asia business during this time? Register for our upcoming webinar “Coronavirus Outbreak: Navigating China HR and Operational Questions” here (24th February, 2020 | 3PM-4PM China Time).

China is temporarily reducing social insurance commitments on SMEs to combat the financial stress caused by the Covid-19. Specifically, the State Council made a surprise decision to reduce or exempt corporate social insurance premiums (pension, unemployment, and work injury insurance) for enterprises, and defer payments made to the housing provident fund applicable for the next few months. We explain the new policy announcements in our latest article, “China to Reduce Corporate Social Insurance Premiums, Defer Housing Provident Fund Payment.”

Total cases in mainland China reached 74,576 with 394 new confirmed cases. The method of calculation has changed once again with Hubei’s health commission separating suspected cases from the confirmed cases once again. The Guardian explains this change – the new system has removed people who were clinically diagnosed (through scans and assessing symptoms) but were found negative through the nucleic acid test.

Deaths from the Covid-19 in China now stands at 2,118 – 114 in the last 24 hours with 108 deaths recorded in Hubei Province.

Maybe N and V needs to update their image of the oxcart full of bodies to something like this. Dozens of ambulances, police escorts - descending on a neighborhood at night.

Although might have to rephrase the “Bring out your dead” caption. I’m guessing that these people were taken from their homes in the dead of night and sent to “hospitals” where they can be isolated from the population and die.

I was just reading over on the ASEAN that the Chinese are now going house to house checking on people. Those infected are removed. One apartment building had people who appeared to be infected and they were taking everyone in the building. They are still looking for 9 families from that building.

WHO saying this isn’t as bad as SARS or MERS then why all these hysterics? And ...just a thought, if China is doing house checks for those infected...do they have a test kit better than the rest of the world? They might if this was from a bio-lab?

Just a curious observation.

the ones I saw were made by individuals and smuggled out - was back when the places were first mentioned. they may have been pulled.

But does not negate that facts about how horrible they are.

“WHO saying this isn’t as bad as SARS or MERS then why all these hysterics?”

WHO is saying that? Didn’t we pass the infected/dead numbers on both of those (which were months in duration) in just a few weeks??

I’m guessing that China is taking anybody with a temperature above 101 and shipping them off. Or - perhaps everyone in an apartment complex if one person has a temperature of 101.

I’ve been watching on Netflix a show called “Pandemic” - it comes up on the “popular now” list. It is a documentary - pretty interesting. And scary.

They show footage from Vietnam during the bird flu. Shows them taking thousands of birds and killing them and dumping them in a pit to try to prevent the spread of the diesese.

I have no doubt that China is doing the same - but with people. Okay - maybe some time in those makeshift “hospitals” crammed in with the others that are infected until they die. But they are trying to stop the spread.

It is an interesting show. One graphic shows a pandemic starting in China - I still need to check where that outbreak begins - but it looked close to Wuhan or Bejing. (I have a screen shot of it).

And then it shows the airplane tracks, and the infection spreading. One image shows NYC and surrounding areas highlighted in red and spreading. And the doctor saying something like “And the trouble is, the virus will be present, and spreading, before we even know it is here. And by the time we DO detect it, there will be a lot of catching up to do.”

I’ve been in that mindset for over three weeks now. My wife thinks I’m a bit nuts. But she has been using the big bottle of hand sanitizer every time she gets in her car, and wipes stuff down with the Clorox wipes.

She takes care of a few people that need help. I’m not sure what will happen when the SHTF close to home. I would like to say “We need to stay home and ride this out”. But then that leaves the people that she helps in harm’s way.

Maybe we can have them stay in our house??

Friend of mine was working in China for a couple of weeks and ran into a very junior official in Beijing. It was just after the Olympics they had banned vehicle traffic to clear the air. He asked the official why they don’t keep banning traffic, since it would be healthier for their people. The guy replied...”no problem...China has MANY people.” Point is, they don’t care. This is a way of thinning their herd. The only problem for them is it’s affecting others outside their borders now.

I was a chemhead in the Army reserve unit before I switch to the Air Force active. I have a lot of experience in setting up Decom stations while in the Air Force so we are a little bit prepared here.

Interesting.

Also reading on the economic front in China that banks are lowering interest rates on business loans and collections have or are ceasing since so many people are quarantined.

Likely won’t be the case here if SHTF. Banks and loans will be expected to be paid. The economic hit here will be huge as many households still run check to check even in the good economy as much of that money has been spent catching up on household needs that were put off during the decade long recession.

Yep. Banks would be happy to take the collateral via electronic documentation.

Just checked and yep those are all propaganda videos professionally made - not the early ones by individuals

One starts with a PLA member in from of a building repeating to aa crowd which heard it is a hospital, saying repeatedly, “This is not a hospital. This is a quarantine center.”

That one or another is by some woman (RIP) who got in thinking she would get medicine and documents what is going on. The building has only one entrance which is chained shut, no one is allowed to leave the building, there is a toilet 200 meters down the road - there are none in the building, but no one is allowed to leave for any reason.

“more than 10 days ago the dead were over 100,000”

Yep, that number is making some sense to many of us here, as it more or less matches the stories coming out of Wuhan. I guess math is hard, but the idea an extra 50 or so people a day were dying there, in such a huge city, simply didn’t make sense, given those stories.
