A code red was issued at South Dade Senior High School
A man was arrested Thursday after he was seen with an AR-15 near a southwest Miami-Dade school, prompting a campus lockdown, school officials said.
Numerous calls to 911 reported sightings of a man riding an ATV with the rifle's barrel protruding from his bookbag while parents dropped off their children at around 7 a.m. at South Dade Senior High School, police said in an arrest report.
School officials locked down the campus as police searched for hours. They did not find an intruder or anyone with a gun and reopened the school.
Jamie Guirola ✔ @jamieNBC6 Update: Arrest made after hours long lockdown at South Dade Senior High School. Man on ATV carrying an unloaded AR-15 arrested off campus and had no connection to school or students. @MiamiSup says todays police response is direct result of lessons learned from Parkland. @nbc6
Christian Louis Edinger, 23, was later arrested and taken to jail. Police later found him at his home, where he told officers that he was driving back from being at his brother's house earlier that morning. He said he drove by the school with his AR-15 in his bag and showed officers his weapons. Police later impounded a shotgun, AR-15, handgun and multiple rounds of ammunition.
School officials said he had no connection to the school or campus.
Edinger is facing charges of improper exhibition of a firearm and interference of a school, according to an arrest report. Attorney information was not available.
In a news conference, Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said the police response was a direct result of lessons learned from the Parkland shooting.
He added that all students and staff are safe and the school day will resume as normal and that parents are welcome to pick up their children.
This is a developing story. Check back with NBC 6 for updates
Stupid panic time, false arrest.
“Christian Louis Edinger, 23, was later arrested and taken to jail. Police later found him at his home...”
Huh?
I thought FL had open carry.
If so, this lucky guy can become very wealthy.
If he just rode past the school and kept on going, his arrest is unwarranted.
On the other hand, if he stopped for no reason or circled the school......
Ridiculous arrest and confiscation of weapons for fabricated charges. So now its illegal to let any part of a long gun be visible as one is legally traveling? And this person is responsible for the schools panicky reaction?
Nah, we cannot open carry unless we are in the woods on the way to or from a camp site.
They have poor jails in Florida. On the other hand NBC Miami has long suffered from bad reporting.
Nah, we cannot open carry unless we are in the woods on the way to or from a camp site.
That means the guy does have a problem.
He should be charged with being a dumbass.
“Nah, we cannot open carry unless we are in the woods on the way to or from a camp site.”
Wrong.
Long guns are a different critter from handguns.
FL Statue 790.25.5:
...Nothing herein contained prohibits the carrying of a legal firearm other than a handgun anywhere in a private conveyance when such firearm is being carried for a lawful use.
Even scary black ones.
Oh, NOES!!! Nots an EVIL AR15???

I’ve talked to the sheriff about it, and that’s what he said.
You can open carry if you want, but I’ma stick to what he said.
Yes, we were talking about pistols.
He should be okay then if it only applies to handguns.
I do know of at least one range that will not allow you to transport any guns anywhere on their grounds unless they are in cases, but maybe that’s just their own personal rule.
Pretty dang big bookbag if you can put an AR 15 in it and only have a barrel protrude; at least without it being broken down.
“Nah, we cannot open carry unless we are in the woods on the way to or from a camp site.”
While fishing too.
“Ive talked to the sheriff about it, and thats what he said.”
ROTFLMAO!
Yup.
I can only assume that your life is dull and un-stimulating.
Anywho, I’m glad you enjoyed that.
That’s good to know.
But isn’t that how everyone ends up losing their guns in the water ^^
