Gov. Newsom [CA] Seeks to Expand Forced Psychiatric Treatment, With Aim of Getting People Off Streets

Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to make it easier for the government to force psychiatric treatment for people with mental illness and expand statewide a still-developing test program that allows officials to more easily take control over those deemed unable to care for themselves.

In a State of the State address Wednesday devoted almost entirely to the issue of homelessness, the Democratic governor said the state should broaden those laws “within the bounds of deep respect for civil liberties and personal freedoms — but with an equal emphasis on helping people into the life-saving treatment that they need at the precise moment they need it.”

Newsom drew support from members of both political parties. But civil libertarians have concerns, while advocates for the mentally ill warned that proper services must be in place and voluntary options exhausted first.

Start with the CA State Senate and Assembly, and I’m down with it!

I find myself agreeing with him. It would solve 99% of the so-called homeless problem in CA.

Get the mentality off the streets and into mental institutions were they belong.

Its inhumane to allow crazy people freedom when they’re incapable of taking care of themselves.

Humoring the mad has led to disastrous consequences in CA.

It was mostly the far leftists including aclu that pushed for leaving the mental Cases and drug addicts on the streets - in the name of civil rights. Some conservatives went along because it saved a lot of money closing the mental hospitals. Anyway, that approach has led to the current disaster. And yes it is extremely unhumane to leave people who so desperately need help to sleep in the cold streets. I do have very serious concerns about forced removals and treatments of any citizen. This kind of extreme govt power can be so very easily abused that it’s almost certain it will be. Don’t have an easy answer but the current mess Is horrible for everyone .

We already have assisted living homes for people with Alzheimer’s.

Some people need around the clock care, period. Like the mentally ill.

Yes, taxpayers have to take care of them but that’s the responsibility of a civilized society.

We’re already paying for it by allowing to them to live in squalor, filth, disease and neglect.

well they closed the institutions long ago so just where did they think these people would end up? If not on the strets they’re in prisons...neither ‘help’ these people. And there are many who would not go willingly for help.

Get the mentally ill off the streets and into the Democrat debates where they belong.

That’s the point of involuntary commitment. You cannot expect a person who has lost the capacity for rational judgment to seek help.

We have to help them for their own good whether they like it or not.

Better for them and better for society.

The incremental iron fist. GTH, Newsom

>> Newsom drew support from members of both political parties

No Republican should support this Leftist BS.

>> But civil libertarians have concerns

Good.

Scumbags like Newsom let things rot to Hell, and then the scumbags overreach in desperation.

Astonishing the people of CA vote for this outcome — collective brain damage.

Wow, the most radical leftist wants us to rewind 50-60 years, almost back to the evil, hated, troglodyte 1950s!

We are all paying for it with a disgustingly filthy public square and unlivable cities and towns. It is seriously corrosive to civil society.

I agree with him. Not everyone is capable of handling freedom.

To just let them out on the streets is poor economy. I believe in civil liberties but I also recognize they’re meant for responsible people.

Some people can never be allowed out into the world. That’s a fact of life.

We have to help them for their own good whether they like it or not.

On one hand I can see that and on the other it worries me.

Involuntary commitment has been abused in the past and the way the political debate is going, where you are called crazy because you don't the average planet temperature is going to rise by 30 degrees in 50 years.

Yup. Taxpayers pick up the tab one way or another. We might as well pick it up on the front end where it will do the most good.

Hmmmm. I can’t help but wonder if the remaining California Republicans and Conservatives won’t be put in mental institutions in the end... It all sounds so -— Soviet.
