That is right, the difference in speed is what matters so his car still moving down the track helped. I estimate that the difference in speed was around 60 mph in the collision with the driver side door. That would be like him being stationary and the other car moving 60MPH. But, that collision threw his car into the air and I could see it bent the entire car right around the dashboard or steering wheel line into a shallow U shape.

Several years ago, I was watching a nighttime NASCAR race.

Another driver wrecked Newman towards the end of the race.

Newman appeared with a woman sportscaster shortly after the end of the race.

Newman told her, “I’m here being interviewed just to show my family I’m OK.”

Newman continued, “You know, they can build safer race tracks, they can build safer race cars, but they can’t do anything about guys who have their heads up their ass!”

I nearly fell over laughing.
