Rancid Food (not pleasant reading)
02/18/2020 | Brian Griffin

Posted on 02/18/2020 10:58:17 AM PST by Brian Griffin

In the middle of the night past I felt a burning sensation traveling up my esophagus. This was followed by fits of coughing and sweats.

I had eaten something that had gone rancid, probably either peanut butter, canned peanuts or cooking oil. Previous nights recently I had the same problem, which I believe came from cookies.

My attack last night lasted about two hours instead of a more typical thirty minutes. I tried to deal with it by spitting out whatever I could, which was mainly mucus.

In the past, things like spaghetti sauce, tortilla and potato chips have given me problems. I can not tell while eating something if it is going to cause me a problem later on.

I live in Florida and I thought food mishandling was giving me the problem, but I now only shop for processed food in high-volume stores. It is not a problem with outdated food. The cookies were dated for 07/07/2020. The canned peanuts are dated for Mar 19 2021 and the peanut butter for 21/Jun/2020.

The dating system for snack foods is not working for this Floridian. There is still a burning feeling in my stomach mid-morning as I type this.

The ultimate problem probably comes from the failure to place preservatives in snack food products. The use of preservatives fell very sharply during the Obama administration. It may also come in part from excessively long storage times for food oil sources. Cocktail peanuts and chips also have large surface volumes, which allow for rancidity to develop fast.

Sorry to unload this unpleasant matter on you folks, but I believe many other people must be suffering as well.

I retired from Emergency Medicine (39 yrs) 6 months ago. I finished in urgent care for the last year. One of my patients was a gentleman who had been taking prilosec for years but came to clinic on a weekend because his reflux pain was not responding to the medicine. I sent him to his internal medicine doctor after the weekend. He was found to have esophageal cancer with metastasis. Long term reflux can degenerate to cancer. Get checked frequently with this medical condition.

The other thing that works well is to eat a teaspoon of rolled oats.

Not sure why it works. Some think the oat fiber causes the valve to close.

“Get your gallbladder checked.”

I was just going to post the same thing. Pain will gradually increase until unbearable if left unchecked...my experience!

Try a week of very low carb diet and I bet it goes away.

See a doctor; you may be having a gall bladder attack. Please don’t wait. In the meantime, eliminate nuts from your diet and limit fried foods to a minimum.

It’s not acid reflux.

I had acid reflux for many years decades ago and am very familiar with its symptoms.

“You didn’t mention where you got your medical degree from.”

Read food labels - added preservatives have become uncommon.

Even rancid peanut butter won’t hurt you, it will just taste bad.

Yep back when I was a LEO we would run into hobos near the train yards, they all had a jar of peanut butter with them.

Its a great survival food, doesn't go bad and is full of protein. The Mexicans all had bags of tortillas those dams things must have a shelf life 5 years.

I’d say either global warming or it’s Trump’s fault, but that sort of stuff usually only hits women, minorities, old folks and children.

Peanuts and peanut butter don’t go bad. They are SEVERELY toxic to some

Eat fresh only. Put all bread in freezer

I suffered chronic acid reflux from child hood to about age 40. Took every antacid known, tried everything. Doctors, scopes, prescriptions, you name it. No success.

I quit wheat and wheat products and have not had a problem of any kind in about ten years.

Yes, there can’t be THAT much rancid food!
Probably needs a scope and GB ultrasound.

My husband ended up with esophageal cancer after years of acid reflux, decades, really. The reflux caused Barrett’s esophagus which developed into cancer. His esophagus was removed in 2011, Most of his esophagus was removed and his stomach was pulled up and attached to what was left of his esophagus. His stomach has been greatly reduced in capacity, it’s almost like a gastric bypass. He has made a good recovery but I would not wish this on anyone.

Check your gall bladder. All the foods you mention are fatty foods. That can really upset a gall bladder that has stones in it or inflammation, and give burning pain in the center of the chest almost like a heart attack if it gets bad.
