I was a bad influence on the Beatles: James Taylor
The Guardian ^ | Feb 17, 2020 | Jenny Stevens

..Born in Boston in 1948, Taylor was, according to his memoir, “brought up devoted to progressive politics, self-improvement and the arts”. His father, a doctor, moved the family to the south when he became the dean of the medical school of the University of North Carolina; his mother didn’t want to go, and fought against the politics she found there. She saw the north-eastern state of Massachusetts as a “lost Eden” and would spend her days doing sit-ins at segregated lunch counters, on protests, and hauling her five kids to Martha’s Vineyard every summer to “restore our Yankee credentials”. Not long after moving the family to North Carolina, Taylor’s father was assigned to the navy. He spent two years on an expedition to the south pole, where he held the keys to the liquor cabinet of 100 men. He went to the bottom of the world and returned with a serious drinking problem...

....He hopes this year to perform to help get out the vote ahead of the US presidential election. He met Donald Trump once, “in an airport. I just thought of him as a frivolous, minor player. It drives me crazy how unworthy he is of our attention and how much of it he has.” He is rooting for the Democratic candidates Deval Patrick and Elizabeth Warren – both from Massachusetts, where he now lives. “But at this point, I’d be happy to see pretty much anyone in – the bar is so low. Because the very worst person possible that you could think to be heading the thing is there. It’s like the Confederacy has won the civil war.”

“So you’d drink a couple of bottles and you could take the edge off.”

The failure talks like a grade school kid. For example,
Question. “How do you get the the Log Ride at Knotts?”
Kid: You just go to the train station and then you will see it.
Adult: It is near the train station.

In October of 2016 I went to a conference in Dallas. I took a shuttle from the airport to the hotel; two other ladies were in the van as well. One of them worked as an event planner. She had met Donald Trump in Las Vegas a few years before (she had a photo taken with him).

She said that he offered her a job. She declined because she didn’t want to move to New York. According to her, he could not have been any nicer nor more gentlemanly. She had nothing negative to say about him at all.

Neil Young has done some GREAT songs, as has Dylan.

The quality of one’s voice often doesn’t matter when it comes to good music, and Dylan and Young are great musicians.

it must have been nice to vacation on Martha's Vineyard....

my parents "hauled" us, 6 kids, to Annapolis in a station wagon where we 3 youngest would have pillows and blankets in the far back....we'd stop at Valley Forge for home made sandwiches with home grown tomatoes, and we'd stay at my fathers parents tiny little apartment on Maryland Ave in Annapolis. we crowded into that little place, no air conditioning.....

but we loved it....we could run around Annapolis at that time as kids....it was safe....

if we were lucky, my parents would rent a room in Seaside heights on the way home and we'd get a day at the beach....

"hauled" off to Martha's Vineyard....indeed.

I agree that both Neil Young and Bob Dylan have made some great music, despite their unique voices. But, that wasn’t really the thrust of my comment, which was in response to another poster’s take on James’ Taylor’s voice.

One of my boys, now in his 30’s listened to a lot of 60’s music for a while, including of course, Dylan. Unprompted by me, he used to call him the “asthma dude” when he was about 10.

One comment was right. His music is depressing.

Massachusetts is where he belongs.

Hope he finds happiness in Massachusetts, and doesn't come back here.

Brilliance of the songwriting and love of history of Mark Knopfler. Who hired Taylor to sing and boost sales. Just as he has partnered with Emmy Lou Harris and Alison Krauss—spreading market share in similar audiences.

Can assure you that Taylor knows zip about the significance of the Mason-Dixon Line,or the Great Circle of it through Delaware-—still outlining the borders and darned accurate.

Should also add— his stay at a ‘psychiatric hospital’ was not confinement or clinically admitted. It was entirely voluntary- could come and go as he pleased, and he did. Some of this smacks of “promotional” angst of the “artist”. Except for the typical heroin stupidity (see Ray Charles, who talked about how stupid it was— just to be with his “in” crowd”, Taylor exhibits the classic trustfund folkie-— no money worries,so he creates his own suffering. Sort of like all the white “blues” players— who purposely self destruct because it makes them “authentic” (while real great poor blues people are usually ignored— no promotion).
