Another week, another bunch of Windows 10 machines punched by a patch (user profiles scrambled)

As 1809 is nudged toward the darkness, the Baron of Bork has plans for 1903 and 1909

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes and duff patches from Microsoft. So, yes, some Windows 10 users have found their PC unhappy following Tuesday's patch shenanigans.

A helpful forum posting from one of Microsoft's loyal MVPs concerning the arrival of KB4532693 for Windows 10 1903 and 1909, and KB4532691 for 1809, has seen some customers reporting that the updates had left their systems a little distressed.

Users have found things reset to a seemingly default state and a temporary user account used for login, the desktop and taskbar shorn of icons, keyboard layouts changed, applications (such as Firefox) not working, and Windows 10 keen to have a user set up their profiles again.

It sounds suspiciously like, for some users, the update somehow restarted Windows 10 using a temporary account, which naturally lacks the settings locked away with the user's profile.

The Microsoft forum is the usual car crash. Some users have found that a few restarts will restore their PCs to working order. Others have opted to uninstall the offending update and put a hold on receiving any more for as long as possible. A potentially risky approach, since there are some important fixes in the patch, but understandable when faced with the borked computer.

Reddit also has its fair share of users complaining about the update. One running Windows 10 1809 reported that the patch "messed up almost everything about my PC".

Microsoft has remained tight-lipped on what might be happening, with the support article for the 1903 and 1909 update warning of issues around Windows Server Container images, but otherwise the update was expected to improve "the installation experience when updating to Windows 10, version 1903" and security.

Shovelling a user's profile off into the recesses of the hard disk is one way of securing things. If you can't access your apps and data, presumably nobody can.

We will update this piece when Microsoft responds to our request for comment. In the meantime, as 1809 prepares to go gentle into that good night as far most users are concerned, it is reassuring to know that the later versions are still seemingly possessed of an ability to make user profiles magically disappear. ®

I’m baffled as to why people have trouble with these updates. They are obviously doing something different than me.

You probably should count your blessings... your experience is out of the ordinary. Your day will probably eventually come. I am someone who friends and relatives call when their computers go on the blink. A fairly high percentage of the time it has something to do with a Microsoft update. They usually think that they have malware or a hardware malfunction.

I have been auto-updating for at least 10 years and never had a single problem.

Consider yourself lucky and back everything up while you can and make sure you have a reboot disc/drive.

You just need to figure out the minimal amount of drivers your PC needs to function. I have Win 7 and a Ryzen 5 working together.

Use Norton 360 and MalwareBytes Premium, and you won’t get hacked.

I have MalwareBytes Premium but not a fan of Norton. Too much of a resource hog. JMHO

Updated about 2 months ago and this happened to one of my Windows 10 laptops. It now has version 1909

Windows 10 bad update
I have Windows 10 installed on a laptop and had decided to "upgrade" from version 1807 to the latest Windows 10 version 1909. It was released on November 12, 2019.

Big mistake as the upgrade did not go well. I had my 'my name' profile folder but also ended up with a TEMP, TEMP.WINDOWS10, TEMP.WINDOWS10.000, TEMP.WINDOWS10.000.001 profile folders.

In the registry it show the user profile as: C:\Users\TEMP.WINDOWS10.000.001

I could not log into Windows.

Error message:
The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded

I logged in as the admin. If you do not have a Administrator option next to your own profile then do the following as it comes in handy to troubleshoot problems like this: Next to the Start button, click on the search icon (magnifying icon, type in cmd and then right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator. Copy this and press the Enter key. Works in Windows 7 and 10.

net user administrator /active:yes

After a few restarts I was able to log in under my profile and found 4 TEMP folders.

The fix was messy so I decided to do a clean install of Windows 10. I formatted the drive and installed.

Example of problem at EaseUS TODO Backup

I have Windows 7 installed on my desktop computer and will stay with Windows 7......!

Any idea what the total of lost productivity to date is for Windows and other Microsoft products?

It is, but it’s saved my 2 2009 HP desktop computers on 7 or 8 occasions, w/ Win-7 Pro x64. So far, it’s caught everything thrown at them, and updates constantly.

Microsoft pretty much hires H1B Indian trash exclusively. Think about it. Shit coders, shit products.

I just make sure to back up my data.

I don’t care about the platform, when it stops working right if a good cleaning won’t fix it, I buy a new one.

> Talk about stressing out! Had to restart four times in order for everything to show up and ever since then have had no issues.

And just think, Microsoft doesn't charge you extra for the adrenaline rush!

Hi Swordmaker!

> Any idea what the total of lost productivity to date is for Windows and other Microsoft products?

No idea. But it's gotta be in the high billions. Scores of hours, per user, per year, times say 500,000,000 users, at what rate per user-hour, for how many years?

My head hurts.

When I stumble upon a computer issue I can’t figure out on my own, my head spins and spins and I have a headache for hours after such an event.
