CAYCE, S.C. — Cayce Department of Public Safety Chief Byron Snellgrove says Faye Swetlik, the 6-year-old girl who’d been missing for days, has been found dead.
His voice trembling, Snellgrove said “it is with extremely heavy hearts we announce we have found the body of Faye Marie Swetlik.”
He said they are treating this as a homicide. Another man was found dead in the neighborhood as well. At this time, the investigation into that death is just beginning.
Snellgrove said there is no danger to the community

“No danger to the community” is code for “the perp is dead, we just can’t say it publicly yet.”

Oh God, that poor beautiful child.
This is just so terrible. She was 6 years old, was there not a parent, adult neighbor, babysitter to meet her at the bus stop and walk her home?
I hope she didn’t have a long walk alone from the bus stop, she was too young for that.

Louis Lent kidnapped 12-year-old Sarah Ann Wood while she was riding her bike near her house in Frankfort, NY, which is about fifty miles from me.
Even though it happened almost 30 years ago, you can still see moms, dads, or sometimes a grandparent waiting for the schoolbus with their young kids if you happen to be out in the early morning driving around rural upstate NY.
The adult body is the perp, dead by suicide.
Both statements are true. When children are abducted and are not recovered within a day, they almost always are dead. Yet “almost” means there are great stories when the children turn up alive - sometimes a few days later, sometimes years later.

If the man found committed suicide then it is likely he killed the little girl and then himself
I lived in Utica, New York at the time Sarah Ann Wood went missing. I was working in NY’s prison system as a Sergeant at the time. I remember the case well. He claimed he buried her in the Adirondacks, and although they searched an area from a map he had drawn, she was never found. I think about her from time to time, and her poor parents, who have never been able to bury their child.
