It’s called the Power Five — the five biggest conferences in college athletics in general, and college football (which pays the bills) in specific. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC.
Increasingly, and without an end in sight, that characterization sounds like a polite form of inclusion than anything based in reality.
The Pac-12 has a big problem — Big Ten for one. SEC, for another. The gap between the financial resources of those conferences (and to a lesser degree the ACC and Big 12) and their western “peer” is so great that equal footing appears to be a fleeting mirage.
In theory they are considered equals. Out in the streets, this is high-majors and mid-majors, bullies and victims.
Tuesday brought the starkest example yet, when Michigan State went and hired Colorado’s head coach, Mel Tucker, when he reportedly agreed to more than double his salary of about $2.6 million. Moreover, at MSU, his pool of money to hire assistant coaches is expected to be double the $3.2 million he had to allocate at CU. MSU is even paying $3 million to Colorado to take care of Tucker’s buy-out. It’s basically raining Spartan green everywhere.

The Pac-12 trying to go its own way with the Pac-12 network and not working with a big media company, for example, Disney, has blown up in their faces. The network is having a horrible time getting on cable and satellite systems even in its own footprint.
The conference is getting killed by a mediocre USC program. That is the only program that might draw national interest.
I think the Pac 12 Network will be bought out by either ESPN, FOX Sports or CBS Sports within the next few years.
Meanwhile, San Diego State won its 25th game in a row and won the Mountain West Conference last night. The Aztecs have three transfers on their squad. If there are any Pac-12 players looking for a place to transfer to they are welcome to come on down to San Diego.
People outside of the west coast just don’t care for the PAC-12.
When your coaches are using your conference as a stepping stone to the real conferences, you might be the Pac-12. (Or a non-Power 5 conference).
ridiculous question considering Michigan State was running out of warm bodied candidates, and ended up hiring a coach who went 5-7 last year. I’d say the joke is on the Big 10...

Nothing can change the time zone problem for Pac-12.
Until they have a real playoff of the top 8 conference champions it is nothing but fantasy FB.
The best thing about the PAC-12 is the perennial rivalry between the Trojans and the Beavers.
The Big XII has no network other than the Longhorn Network and they have a smaller footprint. I think they are in worse shape. I’ve said before and still believe it is inevitable for the Pac-12 to acquire Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech to become the Pac-16 with the other six schools getting cut loose to make their own deals.
They can get creative with their divisions and scheduling by essentially having four “pods”:
Northwest:
Oregon, Oregon St., Washington, Washington St.
California:
Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA
Mountain:
Arizona, Arizona St., Colorado, Utah
Plains:
Oklahoma, Oklahoma St., Texas, Texas Tech
You would have a TV footprint of over 1/3rd of the entire country, more than the Big 10 or the SEC so the major networks will drool to have them under contract. And, truly, there’s a lot of balance there. Everybody would have at least one natural rival.

One of the few highlights of Oregon State football was beating #1 USC 27-21 on national TV in '08.
No disrespect intended at all. I’ve always liked and admired the Beavers, myself, and yes, I especially enjoyed that big victory over the Trojans back in ‘08. Good times indeed.

OK, that does illicit some images.
To be competitive the PAC would need to poach 4 teams from the Big 12....say Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and one more....Texas Tech probably. That would give them enough people within their footprint and enough rich recruiting territory to hold their own against the Big 10 and SEC. Nothing else will.
Also, they need to stop insisting on playing all their games in the evening. By the time they actually play its 10pm or later on the East Coast. All those fans are drunk and ready to pass out after a full day of football by then. Try some noon kickoffs. That would mean their games would be mid afternoon in the Eastern time zone and people might actually watch.

That’s true, but on the other hand people on the west coast don’t care for the SEC so the feeling is mutual.
