An Australian woman died during an eating competition thrown to celebrate Australia day after choking on a lamingtonthe countrys national cake.
The woman was 60-years-old and participating in a competition in the city of Hervey Bay in Queensland on Jan. 26.
CTV News reported that the competition was held on Sunday at the Beach House Hotel. Australians commonly celebrate the public holiday with food festivals as well as parades and fireworks.
People witnessing the event took videos that show a bar filled with cheering onlookers as the competition carried out.
The woman choked while she was eating a lamington which is a type of sponge cake with chocolate and coconut on top. The woman then choked after having a seizure.
CPR was carried out by bar staff until paramedics showed up and transported her to the nearest hospital. She died later at Hervey Bay Hospital.
The hotel posted a statement to Facebook on Monday saying, The management and staff of the Beach House Hotel offer our deepest condolences to the friends and family of one of our patrons following the tragic event at our venue on Australia Day.
Australia Day is a celebration of the day British fleets first sailed to Australia and arrived in Sydney Harbour in 1788.
Of course she choked on it, there was COCONUT SHRED on it.
The cake looks OK otherwise...
maybe she choked to avoid reading the book of rules and regulations...
LOL, you can try to sell me on the virtues and benefits of coconut the rest of your life, it still doesn’t make me want to eat it. I don’t like it at all.
I won’t eat anything with that stuff in it. One taste and it is in the nearest trashcan.
I find it vile, and those who like it can have my share, my dog’s share, the kids’ from across the street share, and any found in the local mega-mart.
Nope, don’t like it, not at all. I can guarantee there hasn’t been anything containing that.....stuff in my house since the ex moved out. Nor will there be if I have anything to do with it.
Nope nope nope. Not enough nopes in the nope universe.
I take it that you don’t care much for coconut.
I suppose eating your competition could be hazardous to your health.
Not really that high on my favorites list, no. ;-)
You and my wife would make a good pair.
She hates coconut, but loves other types of nuts.
I love all types, including coconut. Mounds bars are one of my faves..............
Well, yeah, it killed her!.............
I hear it was cake to die for.
Reminds me of a woman who died in a water drinking contest somewhere in California, trying to win a play station type prize for her son.
Been together since age 19, this month I am 69. I am way too old to train in a new one. LOL But if he dies, I am going with him! I don’t want to live on this earth one day without him.
Winnie the Pooh...
Pooh: “I promise.” “If you live to be a 100, I want to live to be 100 minus one day so I never have to live without you.”
We love to travel so hopefully we will die on a marvelous trip, together! Hey I am a hopeless romantic! He brought me a bouquet of roses yesterday. Kinda has to, our first Valentines Day I was in hospital, he brought me flowers, so he kinda sorta has to do that every year. LOL
Coffee is more my style.
nice :)
Don’t laugh. That’s tomorrow night’s dinner on potato rolls with mustard and onion. Who won the ‘19 Gluttonfest? Joey Chestnut again, or has Kobayashi made a comeback?
I wish to thank everyone in this thread (coconut lovers or not) who have correctly pointed you that don’t eat anything like this without a BIG glass of milk. Preferably at least a quart jug or larger, chilled to about 40 degrees. (I prefer skim or 1% myself; your mileage may vary.)
I hate these eating contests. They’re sickening to watch.
RIP.
There’s a reason that Gluttony is one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
I was going to add that sentence word for word, but thought it was self-evident. Sadly, a lot of folks can’t see too well these days.
Same here so I have no interest in them except when something like this is posted on FR. They are shake your head items.
