‘It’s the pneumonia everybody in China knows about’ – but many deaths will never appear in official coronavirus figures
Wuhan’s overburdened health workers are unable to confirm many of those who died were suffering from Covid-19, which means they will not show up in official figures

CDC media briefing notes (by Sharon Sanders af FluTrackers)

teleconference notes:

Condolences to family of American who died in China. Also condolences to all of China.

New case - Wuhan returnee. Mild case. (FluTrackers already has reported this case on the site.)

Total number is 13.

Mishap in letting this patient out of hospital. Have made procedural changes to prevent testing mishaps again. I think this patient is back in quarantine?

CDC has screened 30k people from China.

Those who pass screening continue on to final destination. Asking them to restrict their movement for 14 days.

Should be prepared for this virus to gain a foothold in US

At point we will see community spread in US.

Developing guidances for practitioners.

PPE supplies being organized for future need.

Something about masks....loosing connection off and on....

CDC working in close collaboration with Japan.

Transmission breaking up. Missed some data.

Redialed - Back in....

Question and answer period....

Incubation period? 24 days? Have seen the paper. Rush on publishing data due to emerging situation. Also looking at other data. Abundance of data says 14 days as end of incubation period.

Cases out of China reported lower...what about that? Optimistic that this is a good sign. Don’t have any supportive data. Hopefully WHO delegation can provide an insight.

Hope every US state has a test kit this week.

Criteria for testing in US...some symptoms + travel history...and/or a contact of confirmed cases....basic criteria...so far not seeing widespread community spread in US.

Any US CDC employees part of WHO delegation in China? 3 WHO staff advance team are there. CDC is ready to help. Have not been invited yet.

All clinical specimens being sent to CDC as states get organized. Will still do this after all states are up and running.

Americans on board cruise ship docked in Japan. For sure some are diagnosed. Working with Japan. Want to protect Americans health. Coordinating with US Embassy.

Will warmer weather lower transmission? This is true for flu. New disease - don’t know.

Info from China? Getting data? Lot more data coming out in recent weeks as compared to beginning. Want to touch the data themselves - directly. Would like to have someone on the ground there to be able to directly access the core data. Also CDC could offer a broader view of core data. No direct access to data.

Based on these notes, in my opinion, the CDC appears to be lagging in their preparation. Organizing PPE and guidelines for practitioners should have been done last week. One does need to get the hands on data to see how serious this is, just look at the fact that there are 400 million quarantined, as well as all the other extraordinary measures being taken.

Translation: they don’t have an f’ing clue.

Deluding themselves into believing they are going to be limited to isolated breakouts they can control and thereby control the panic and (most importantly from their perspective) the economic fallout. Also they seem to believe that telling a population like that of the United States to prepare for local outbreaks is somehow going to prepare a distracted population to deal with what is happening in China is going to be a productive exercise.

I get trying to be professional but sheesh, someone official needs to say in no uncertain terms to the US population, that this is coming, it’s bad and you need a months worth of food.

I know any can’t do a month, but I know many who can and this is not even on their radar because everyone is acting so cavalier

How can anyone who knows the facts about this virus say any of what she said with a straight face? 24 day incubation period, no symptoms contagious.

The guy who sits next to me at work was in Indiana, Portland, and San Jose just late last week.

He’s been on, minimum, 6 planes. Stayed at three hotels. Spent time in 4 offices.

He’s got a four year old in pre-school.

Think about this one guy if he were infected. This is just one average corporate worker.

Girl, 3, Readmitted to Hospital After Coronavirus Quarantine

Published 2 hours ago • Updated 3 mins ago

A 3-year-old girl, who was one of seven patients admitted to the hospital after returning from the center of the coronavirus outbreak, has been re-admitted to the hospital for additional testing.

Annabel Wucinski is in isolation at Rady Children’s Hospital awaiting the results of additional testing for coronavirus, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

The girl and her father, Frank Wucinski, were first taken to the hospital last Wednesday, the day a plane carrying 167 passengers from Wuhan, China touched down at MCAS Miramar.

And the above is a govt. controlled quarantine. And we are supposed to feel safe knowing there are 1000s of people being told to self-quarantine?

Interesting that the quarantined sign a petition calling for better separation, sanitation of surfaces and better testing addressed to the CDC.

Speaks a lot on just how well they’re conducting these quarantines in military facilities.

Maybe they should send out xanax instead for the panicking snowflakes :)

Been a little while now since this puppy’s been around.

People travelling with it likely WAY before China let it out of the bag.

Yeah no, the worriers here need xanax more than anything else.

2 deaths outside of China. In a world with 5 plus billion people outside of China.

And it throws people’s panties into a bunch

Too funny

Coronavirus has many U.S. firms waiting for products to ship
Today, 01:26 PM

ByJOYCE M. ROSENBERG AP Business Writer
February 12, 2020, 12:00 PM
NEW YORK — When the factory in China that makes Romy Taormina’s anti-nausea wristbands closed for the Lunar New Year in late January, she expected production to resume by early this month. But many factories across China are still closed to try to limit the spread of the coronavirus, leaving business owners in limbo.

“There’s no guarantee now when they’re going to be up and running,” says Taormina, who’s counting on a shipment of her Psi Bands to meet an increase in orders from Target stores.
...
It has been hard for U.S. businesses to get information about how long the closings might last. After hearing rumors for a week, Taormina found out only this past Monday from her manufacturer that it was closed and didn’t know when it would reopen. The factory closed Jan. 18 and had expected to get back to work Feb. 2.
