Oscars 2020: Britain's '1917' and South Korea's 'Parasite' vie for best picture at the Academy Awards

Is "1917" a wartime shoo-in for best picture, or might "Parasite" make some Oscar history Sunday night?

The 92nd annual Academy Awards brings to a close yet another awards season, one in which the main acting categories are led by performers who've run roughshod over their competition. But the race for best picture is somewhat more up in the air.

Sam Mendes' World War I thriller "1917" is the closest to a favorite, having won important Golden Globe, Producers Guild and Directors Guild awards. But Bong Joon-ho's South Korean black comedy "Parasite," which took the best ensemble award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, is vying to be the first foreign-language film to win best picture. Also competing in the category are Quentin Tarantino's 1969-set L.A. fantasy "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Martin Scorsese's gangster epic "The Irishman," divorce drama "Marriage Story," coming-of-age adaptation "Little Women," retro racing drama "Ford v Ferrari" and World War II satire "Jojo Rabbit."

Having swept through awards season already are "Joker" star Joaquin Phoenix (best actor), "Judy" thespian Renee Zellweger (best actress), "Once Upon a Time" stalwart Brad Pitt (supporting actor) and "Marriage Story" scene-stealer Laura Dern (supporting actress). It'd be the first Oscars for Phoenix and Dern, and the first Academy acting honor for Pitt, who won as a producer for best picture "12 Years a Slave" in 2014.

People I know told me 1917 was really good, I haven’t seen it yet but I’ll probably check it out at some point. The rest of the nominees don’t interest me all that much. I haven’t watched that many new films this year but the best one I’ve seen was Dragged Across Concrete. I really enjoyed Avengement but that’s hardly a film that wins any awards

1917 was way better than Parasite. Neither was even close to Joker.

Best picture I have seen in many years was Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Brad Pitt should at least get an Oscar for best actor.

I saw three of the movies nominated: 1917, once upon a time... and the Irishman. I’m ok with either of the first two winning. the Irishman should not even have been nominated. It was a too long and lacked originality. Pacino though was very good.

Not very good. Very stupid. Be sure you go see Saving Private Ryan before 17 or the old Midway before the new one.

I’ll see a movie I like several times. 1917 I never want to see again. Between the Milk, Magical airplane crash, body surfing, lousy German marksmanship and the rat it’s just plain stupid.

Pitt is nominated for Best Supporting actor, not Best Actor.

Perhaps China should enter a documentary about a government organization experimenting with all the color, violence, drama, excitement, and the action sequences of escape attemtps....they could call it......”Wuhan - The Untold Story.”

Same here, there is just something about hippies being fried with a flamethrower makes me smile.

For me, the only award I’m concerned with is Best Visual Effects. ‘Avengers:Endgame’ needs to win that.

Beyond that, I couldn’t care less.

Anything but a comic book movie. Only thing worse than a comic book movie is a Disney movie.

I actually enjoyed Joker as it was not a comic book movie as such. It is very very derivative of King of Comedy and Taxi Driver but the youngins don’t get that which makes them enjoy it more. Phoenix deserves best actor though.

Pacino was good but he didn’t pull off a German American from Brazil, IN by way of Detroit as well as Nicholson did several years ago in Mamet’s film.

DeNiro was awful.

I thought 1917 was freaking awesome from a cinematic standpoint. You had to pay really close attention or you’d never notice when they’d cut for a new scene. I really enjoyed the movie.

Joker wasn’t woke enough for the Hollywood crowd so it’s unlikely to win Best Picture, even though it deserves it.

Are they still having Academy Awards? I thought those things closed down.

Once I had to attend a conference at Opryland in Nashville. It was somewhat like the Academy Awards, only not as tacky.
