A Canadian businessman and failed mayoral candidate was thrown in jail for 30 days after telling a judge he burned 1 million Canadian dollars in cash -- in two separate bonfires -- to avoid paying his wife spousal and child support as part of their divorce settlement, according to a report published Tuesday.
In an Ottawa Superior Court hearing last week, Bruce McConville, 55, told a judge he withdrew about 1 million Canadian dollars -- about $750,000 USD -- in 25 separate withdrawals from six separate bank accounts. He claimed he then burned the cash in two bonfires – $743,000 on Sept. 23 and $296,000 on Dec. 15, Ottawa Citizen reported.
McConville, who ran for mayor of Ottawa in 2018, claimed to have receipts to prove he withdrew the money. He said he did not record the bonfires and no one witnessed him set the cash ablaze.

I understand the sentiment, but that’s a little extreme. Unless he actually buried it somewhere.
He probably stashed the cash.
He's also stupid. He should have at least burned some fake bills and filmed it.
Whether he did or not he goes to jail.
I worked at the same place as a guy who went through the company’s training program to be a welder. He had a J.D. degree (I saw the actual degree). Said he would have had to pay his ex-wife a fortune if he remained a lawyer and he wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction.
He could’ve spent most of it all on strippers and drugs, like Hunter

The old days were correct. if you want to leave, leave. but you take what you came in with, you’re the one bailing.
And the children stay with the man, they are his progeny and that’s what the marriage contract was about.

Do they make you pay child support based on wealth or on income or on earning potential?
Would still get him a contempt order and some prison time.
I had Uber driver who sad he was doing it to pay less alimony. I think she was eventually getting remarried.
I have a feeling that money exists somewhere.
If I was a judge, I’d be loathe to let him go. There is no evidence that money was destroyed. Assuming it is destroyed is buying a pig in a poke.
So the judge can allocate a $1,039,000 set-aside for the wife out of their shared assets, then divide up the rest equitably.
The money he “burned” should only count against him. And if he didn’t really burn it (we all doubt he did), he may run afoul of Canada’s laws if he ever says “just kidding” and tries to spend it.
