CNBC ^

Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health told CNBC on Monday that a quarter of China’s coronavirus cases require intensive treatment.

“About 25% of them have very serious disease, requiring relatively intensive or really intensive care,” said the director of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Makes you wonder what the Chinese were working on, in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“What happens when 200 show up for 10 beds?”

American resolve and ingenuity take over. If Elon Musk can set up huge tents to increase Tesla production in Fremont CA in a matter of a couple weeks, it will happen for hospitals as well.

I have had the flu maybe 5 or 6 times my life - and I have never gone to the hospital for it. I think that those who go to the hospital for a disease with 0.1% lethality are those at high risk and already very ill - like the elderly, the very young and the immune-compromised...hence, the 10% mortality rate once you have the flu in a hospital. Of course, if they didn’t go, that number would certainly be far higher.

“And I don’t know about other states but in Georgia we lost a ton of healthcare personnel because of Obamacare, lots of wonderful experienced doctors and nurses decided to retire or not take on new patients. “

That f’ing guy and his hangers-on...the “gift” that keeps on giving. Even without the coronavirus or something of similar effect, our healthcare system is far less capable than it was before his traitorous carcass inhabited the White House. It will take decades to fix it - you can decide to have more doctors (let alone experienced ones) and then press a button to get them. Them or nurses.

I hope that you’re right and that the mortality rate is leveling off and even dropping, because this thing is going to hit this country pretty hard before too many more weeks go by. Maybe our standard of care and our preparations to keep the disease contained will result in a much lower rate, but only time will tell.

It is not a problem. It is just something that has started worrying me on each virus thread and Twitter.

I have been watching the numbers since last week including a predictive chart started 1/22 that was extraordinarily accurate(well infected rates and deaths were a little over the numbers predicted) until 1/30. I think that is the day the major infected cities in China could no longer keep up with testing. Keep in mind that the bodies they are picking up in apartment complexes have not been tested and are going straight to crematoriums. So I am a little leery of the numbers out of China, especially watching what they have been doing to the ability to get tested. They have shut down leaving your house and have been rejecting patients at hospitals. There was a very brave guy I was following online who was visiting every hospital and trying to stay out of the governments hands and reporting on what he saw and taking pictures. I think that he got caught this afternoon.

That’s fair.

It’s my take that the only real solid numbers we have, is the ones outside of China. Still, that’s not a large enough sample to extrapolate meaning from.

It would seem to me that Johns Hopkins University wouldn’t bother updating the online chart, if there wasn’t some value to the data.

Am I suspect of that data? Well, it is China. It is a face saving culture, and it is a Communist entity.

Wish I could address all the population for this disease, but that’s not going to happen.

That is a whole different story. This virus has several inserts.

Cases outside of China changed by five new cases today. It changed from 183 to 188. I will be checking again around 23:00 PST.

1) With this disease, like any other that infects you, you either survive it or you die. Unless I’m missing something, those are the only 2 choices.

Which makes you wonder at the choice of inserts(if what I have read is correct and not just speculation)....do you totally get rid of it even if you survive the first round.

I really they can stop it from spreading outside China. India would be a disaster if it made it there.

Yes, I’m sure it would be.

I don’t mean this to put down India, and admittedly I’ve never been there, but I do think of India as a dirty nation.

There are a lot of poor folks, and the standard of living is pretty minimal. Maybe it’s better than I think. I’m sure there are more than a few bright spots too.

If someone happens along and can correct me on any of this, I’m willing to listen.

I have a buddy from college who was here on a student visa from India. He refused to date Indian chicks because even the ones here refused to (or simply didn't) even wear deodorant or really maintain good personal hygiene.

India is like many of the second world countries - there's the rich/well-off middle class that may not have the same levels of cleanliness as we do, but they're decently clean and you could probably survive living there a short time.
However, the vast majority of India is extremely poor, and that's where your crazy levels of uncleanliness come in. Animals are free to wander the streets and poop wherever they go. Alot of humans still defecate wherever they're at. The rivers are generally pretty foul, and used for bathing/laundry despite many a cow or human corpse floating nearby. And that level of living is not just something you could teach people to cease.

A 25% rate of patients needing intensive care would overwhelm any nations ability, even ours, if this becomes pandemic. Without the availability of intensive care beds the death rate would increase greatly.

Unfortunately this is reality.

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I thought.

I don’t look down on people born in situations like that. It is what it is. That’s natural for them. Sadly.

Along with all that much come some pretty ripe moral dilemmas.
