Chinese stocks plunge as coronavirus fears grip market

Chinese stocks tumbled as traders returned from an extended lunar new year holiday despite a promise from the central bank to pump liquidity into the financial system to help cushion the blow of a deadly coronavirus outbreak.

The CSI 300 index of major Shanghai- and Shenzhen-listed equities dropped as much as 9.1 per cent at the open on Monday with losses across the board. That puts the benchmark on track for its worst-day performance since August 2015.China had reported 17,205 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 361 deaths as of the end of Sunday.

The fall in equity markets came even though the central bank announced on Sunday it would provide Rmb1.2tn ($173bn) in additional liquidity to money markets in the largest one-day open market operation since 2004. That was on top of 30 measures across five ministries and regulators meant to provide financial support to industries seriously affected by the outbreak.

There are some companies that are already getting hit. Oil tankers are one. China imports lots of oil, and now they are staying home and not driving. This will hit oil tankers pretty bad for the next several months.

“until the panic and chaos in china affects the $2.5 TRILLION of their annual world exports of parts, PCs, chemicals, medications, electronics and electronics parts, auto parts, hardware, consumer goods, and about a bazillion other items in the supply chain that U.S. and world industries are completely dependent upon...”

Yep, that’s why I spent nearly $1500 last week stocking up for a long ride. See the lines in Hong Kong now for people there who didn’t stock up - and I’d prefer not having to stand in line with people who may be infected.

I was hoping to take off this week, but, apparently alcohol and hand sanitizer does work against viruses (I thought only bacteria), so now it’s time to stock up on those, and also pick up some more latex gloves.

Next week it’s topping off my fuel. Also considering 100 lbs. or so of meat, and cheese, but not yet. The supply lines for those products are somewhat less dependent on China (but, as you say ‘auto parts’ also means truck parts...so eventually deliveries slow down too).

People can think what they want of me, but I figure I’ll consume most of it over the next few years (at least 80% of what I buy)...so, to me, all it is buying (mostly) the same stuff all at once.

How long does the virus live on a hard surface - - something like a cheap knockoff computer keyboard?

No virus survives on a hard dry surface for more than a few hours.

The best defense against any virus is;

(1) Get enough sleep every day (most important to keep resistance up)
(2) Eat nutritious foods
(3) Wash hands with soap and water every chance you get when outside of home.

I have read that this virus is pretty strong and can remain on unwashed, dry, not to hot, surfaces for a long time. Things like door knobs, touch screens, etc.

I am NOT saying it is going to stay on the McDonald's touch screen all day...but using something on your fingers when touching something like that is always a good idea. A good bleach based wipe is great for touch screens, phones, and keyboards. If you are not wiping down your office work area twice a day, you are making yourself susceptible to catching what everyone is bringing into the office.

And customers are yucky.

I use ATM machines from time to time... and card readers at stores. It might be time for some entrepreneur to invent little disposal finger protestors. I’m sure some Chinese factory can turn them out cheap... oh wait... never mind.

At least 5 days for the common cold variant of coronavirus.

Then you’d just contaminate your purse/pocket with the finger protectors.

If you’re concerned, take something like lysol wet wipes with you. IIRC those kill regular cold coronavirus in 4m if kept damp. Dunno, no really great solutions for this.

Years ago there were little finger covers for turning pages. I wonder if those are still made?

It’s the best I can offer.

Wrap your finger in one & then use it that way.
