A Virginia Beach man is embracing a major challenge: Seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.
Its called the World Marathon Challenge.
Im feeling good. Im looking forward to it, said Ashoka Arora.
Ashoka Arora
Arora said he has run ultra-marathons - which are 100 miles - and he has completed a few Ironman races, but now hes taking on a whole new challenge.
He said when he got into running, this was a bucket list item for him.
News 3 met up with up with the 58-year-old at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. He said it is his second favorite place to run next to First Landing State Park.
He owns the Nawab Indian Cuisine restaurants in Hampton Roads and when hes not working, hes working out.
Organizers said competitors will fly for a total of 68 hours and will be running 183 miles after the seven days.
Its going to be a little challenging in the heat. The cold should not be a problem, said Arora.
He leaves Saturday and the first marathon is in Antarctica. Then, they fly to Cape Town, then Australia, Dubai, Madrid and Brazil. The final race is in Miami.
Its a mind game. Its not as much of a physical effort more than half as mental, said Arora.
Great way to have a heart attack
I just listened to a podcast this week featuring Sean Swarner. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer twice and survived. He has one working lung. He’s scaled the 7 summits (the largest mountains in each continent), skied to the North Pole and South Pole, run multiple iron mans, and now he’s planning the 7x7x7 too.
Next headline: Virginia man dies of Wuhan Flu while running a marathon.
The real Iron Man.
Wouldn’t the Antarctica Marathon be mostly sliding on ice like a cartoon character does?
yeah really.
...He said when he got into running, this was a bucket list item for him...
Well that’s healthier than my bucket list.
I want to drink a bottle of “Night Train” before I die but it seems to only be sold in only a few other countries.
It was a brutally strong, cheap wine back in the 80s.
I found out about it because a band wrote a song about it. :)
Running is healthy.
Marathons are sickly.
Some people do not have enough to do with their lives, apparently.
Knee replacement surgery is scheduled for the following week.
Seven continents? Even flying commercial, what’s his share of jet A in 3 days? A wild guess: 400 gallons. (24k miles divided by 60 passenger mpg equals 400 gallons.). For what, being self absorbed?
A former farmer friend of mine wrecked his marriage because everything had to fit around his running habit, that averaged 14 miles EVERY day. He would say: “very few people can do what I do.” He was driven by pride.
Being self absorbed takes on many forms though, not just running.
“Godliness with contentment is great gain” apostle Paul.
Australia will be a problem given his 7 day time frame. Antarctica will be a problem for several reasons.
Hey pal: Does the name Jim Fixx mean anything to you?
How about Karl Wallenda.
I knew a guy in Ca that dropped dead while running his third 100 mile marathon in a week. Frank was a good guy, but became obsessed with running after losing a bunch of weight.
Australia will be a problem given his 7 day time frame.
= = =
If he ran a circuit going west to east around the South Pole, could he gain a day for each lap?
Insanity. Doesn’t even seen possible to me.
The cold shouldn’t be a problem. Does he know they are going to Antarctica ? Lol
Maybe he will run it in a treadmill inside one of the research outposts.
Imagine if he put all that time and money into doing something useful.
