Punxsutawney Phil undergoes great stress every year on Groundhog Day and should be replaced by a robot, the leader of PETA says.
Ingrid Newkirk writes in a letter to the furry celebritys Groundhog Club that Phil deserves a break and should be allowed to retire.
The request, posted on PETAs website, comes ahead of Sundays annual ceremony which will determine whether spring arrives early this year.
If Phil sees his shadow this weekend in the small Pennsylvania town, he will retreat and winter will continue for six weeks. If Phil does not see his shadow, spring will be here soon.
It is a burden that Phil should be spared, according to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
As a prey species, groundhogs actively avoid humans, Newkirk writes to club president Bill Deeley. Being in close proximity to the public causes these animals great stress.

peta should retire and be replaced by “sanity”. What pathetic, whining nitwits.
PETA has not one whit of the ancient history surrounding Feb. 2nd!
Sure, it is ‘groundhog day’, and if PETA had any brains, they would not just pick ‘one of’ but ‘all’ those creatures monitored in the sunlight that day!
A mechanical robot would be as much an affront as they see the poor little critter!
PETA shows their ignorance to the spiritualists, and therefore, suggest what might be deemed by those, ‘anathema’!
And everyone that works for PETA would be all in for killing the baby!

In related news the Triple Crown will be run by the jockies themselves. Whether the horses will be allowed to bet on them remains to be decided.
If it were up to PETA and enviro-whackos humanity would vanish from the face of the earth.
“Don’t Drive Angry!”
So if an animal comes along and eats a groundhog, should be clear those animals out of the area because of the stress it causes?
Ah, it goes like this: Winter:Dec.21 to March 21. Spring: March 21st. to June 21st. Summer : June 21st. to Sept. 21st. Autumn: Sept.21st to Dec.21st. Not because of some prognosticating rodent.(although he is a cute little guy.)
Just made the wife and myself two New York Strips steaks smothered in onions a little while ago. Yum!
