Maybe. I’m going off first reported cases. If it was in China in early December, for all we know there was a case or two was probably here too written off as flu.

First you get the virus, then a while later you get pneumonia, then after that you (may) die.

It's a rather compressed time schedule with this bug. "Onset" is the first appearance of the signs or symptoms of an illness. "Dyspoena" is shortness of breath.

In 2017-18, in the USA, the flu killed 10% of the people hospitalized for it (confirmed flu cases). Estimated to be 0.25% died of all people that got the flu.

However, we didn’t shut down cities. So I think it is pretty safe to say that whatever numbers are coming out of China are far too low.

Where? And who determines the cause of death. We are not talking about the US system. Grandma dies at home, they bring her to the crematorium, and no one knows the better.

We won’t ever know how many deaths there are.

In the USA as well I have seen a talk of a 30 year old and a 50 year old. People in the prime of their lives. I guess if I was going to try to take down a country via economics rather than a fighting war, I would go after that age range.

Exactly who is validating the reported numbers? Are people still being turned away from hospitals? Did they have enough test kits?

I do believe China doesn’t want the “official” numbers to be higher than that for SARS.

Exactly. That is why the 10 %. Right now they think it’s just a bad flu season. How do they test timely when the US cannot ? Hopefully will be just 2 to 3 % here in the states. Then we have to deal with the aftermath.

It’s hard to keep clear between “mortality rate” and “transmission rate”.;

Anyway, increasing the number infected lowers both.
