New students at the University of Missouri will be required to participate in a tracking program designed to measure and enforce class attendance, according to a new report from The Kansas City Star.
Despite privacy concerns, officials defended the decision as one to the benefit of students, as the school's athletics department has already been using the same app, SpotterEdu, to track certain student-athletes.

I wonder what will happen when the tracking software shows different attendance rates by race and sex...
Hey, how about if they don't show up, they get a FAILING grade. Jeesh.....make students take some responsibility to show up on their own and out of a sense of learning......or is that too much to ask from today's generation ???
I went to U of MIssouri Law School (Columbia) for one year. I would not have gone there had they had such a program in the ‘80s.
I needed a fill-in credit so I took an environmental class, auditorium style. Running close, I sat two rows from the back.
About one minute before class a bunch of athletes came in and sat behind me.
Each had their ‘issues’ sharpened pencil and pad.
They were asleep before the class started.
Don’t worry. It’s only for your good.
We’ll never misuse it.....
All the students have to do is claim that they dont have a cell phone and that if the University wants to track them then they can buy them a cell phone.
When I was a student at university i was start enough to never register my car with the university so that when I graduated the school couldnt hold my diploma to demand payment of their bogus parking tickets issued to me by the campus police.
Don’t they grade at Mizzou?
Good point. Is the school going to track these kids after they graduate and leave town?
I put a tracking device on my MIL’s car. She is 80+ and gets lost. Those things are VERY accurate.
Oh, this will surely increase enrollment (sarcasm)
That is smart !!!
One of the students who never bothered showing up to class missed the mid-term. He came to me wanting to have a make up. I told him hell no as I announced the date of mid-term each class for several weeks before.
Heres an idea. Just put a scanner at the classroom door, and have the students scan in with their ID cards.
Oh, wait. That wont work. Because then the university couldnt monitor a students every move. Heck, one of them might even attend one of those nasty Trump rallies. The university would need to know about things like that.
The government does not have the right to do this, and neither does the college.
But they do it anyway.
Even back in the 1980’s there were a fair number of students who showed up only on exam day.
One of the earlier posters suggested that the professors should take attendance and factor that into the grade.
It seems that would be a better way. What if a friend takes your smart phone into the classroom for you?
Turn up the burner under that pot of frogs, just a little more...
Umm, who cares about attendance at a college? They’re adults, and they’re paying whether they attend class or not.
If you dont show up, how are you going t9 be indoctrinated?
This is crazy. The school should make them wear body cams so they can not only find them but also see what they’re doing.
;-)
