MDHHS tells residents not to worry over potential Michigan coronavirus cases

Health officials in Michigan are trying to confirm whether or not there are cases in Metro Detroit too.

Three possible cases are being investigated. Test results are expected to show within the week.

“The cases being investigated have mild illness,” says Lynn Sutfin, with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. “And at this time, they are self isolated.”

Michigan health officials don’t want residents to worry, as test results aren’t known yet, but urge residents to protect themselves.

“There’s nothing that people need to panic about or worry about," Sutfin said. “They should continue to use precautions like they would any other health threat, including the flu or the common cold.”

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

...mild illness.

Until the life threatening pneumonia part that puts you in the ICU for a week or two...

I want to know how the Seattle patient (that we’re treating via ROBOT (because this has taken down whole medical teams apparently, in China) is making out...

I’m sure they would have told us if he was doing poorly! </Richter scale sarcasm>

No updates makes me wonder.

We seemed to get more updates from the ebola patients when we treated them in CONUS.

This guy has fallen off the radar entirely.

I am sure these are true statements:

1) Not everyone exposed to Coronavirus will come down with it.

2) Some who come down with Coronavirus will experience it as a mild sickness.

3) Not everyone who gets Coronavirus will get pneumonia.

Also, the numbers being tossed around about mortality are nothing but wild ass guesses. People are dividing the number of people at the hospital by the number of people who die, that is not how it works. The death rate for the flu is calculated by the number of people who caught it (yes, it’s an estimate) by the number who die. Only a very small percentage of people who get the flu go the hospital, the very sick. So to take that ratio (hospital patients / deaths) is not how it works.

It’s too bad China is unwilling to share information. I am sure it’s worse than we know, however, they live differently than we do and it might not have the same effect here in the United States. By the end of February we will know where we stand.

I was wondering how often this happened back in the days of Mao when China was essestially a closed society.

China is out of test kits.

YOu can’t rely on any of their numbers. Period.

I’m watching the western nations (and japan) to see mortality rates.

The OTHER thing I’m watching is how china ACTS. I believe little of what they SAY, but how they ACT is very instructive.

China is currently freaking out. Even the CCP. I’ve never seen that in my 50+ years on this planet. They’re digging up roads, crashing their already slowing economy and quarantining now nearly 70M people. They’re militarizing hospitals and some large cities are dedicating multiple hospitals just for coronavirus patients.

THAT I’m paying attention to.

Even if only 10% of the people who get this get pneumonia, that will crash our health care system. Better hope you don’t have a heart attack during that time, you might not get an ICU bed or surgery.

That’s a good question.

Gotta wonder, if this is a true zoonotic transmission this time, if some of the millions dead from the ‘great leap forward’ died of some sort of SARS like virus.

Let’s just hope here in the US things go differently. We do have the advantage of advanced warning, probably are healthier than a lot of those over there. We aren’t as packed in as they are, public transportation is almost the only way to move in Wahu where the outbreak is the worst. They also let it get to this point before they started reacting seriously. We have things going for us, sit tight it just might be ok here.

We’re still allowing planeloads of people from China.

I’m not optimistic.

Agreed on that. We should shut down Air Plane internationally immediately. I’m very disappointed in President Trump on this point. I don’t give a crap who is inconvenienced, air travel should literally be shut down planet wide until we are sure what is happening .

“We’re still allowing planeloads of people from China.”

Every flight not originating in the USA needs to be turned back. Should’ve started a week ago.

I agree totally.

But the elites who make these decisions don’t want to crash the economy and lose money.

Millions of peasants are acceptable collateral damage to them.

And they’re probably shorting the market as we speak.

Just read this ...

Preparedness of the 2019-nCoV outbreak

• 2019-nCoV may be about to become a global epidemic
• Self-sustaining human-to-human spread is already present in all major Chinese cities
• Seeding outside mainland China and subsequent local establishment may become inevitable, unless some or all of the following interventions are deployed quickly
• Substantial, draconian measures limiting population mobility should be taken immediately
• Cancellation of mass gatherings, school closures and instituting workfrom-home arrangements
• Should containment fail and local transmission is established, mitigation measures during previous major outbreaks, e.g. SARS,MERS or pandemic influenza could serve as a useful reference template
• Regions with the closest travel links with major Chinese ports, preparedness plans should be readied for deployment at shortnotice
