Gorgeous Golden Pheasant Makes Rare Snowy Appearance
WCVB ^

Amazing video shows one of China's most beautiful and reclusive birds, the Golden Pheasant.

The birds were spotted foraging in central China's Ganshan National Forest Park. The brightly colored birds are native to forests in mountainous areas.

They are a protected species in China, as their population numbers are decreasing.

They were recently named, along with the white swan, as the city birds of Sanmenxia.

Take a look at the video above to see the birds in action.

"Do you like our pheasant?"

"It's artificial?"

"Of course it is."

I’ve been to Zoos all over this country and in Europe. I do not remember seeing this gorgeous pheasant in any Zoo. Fabulous plumage, LOVE the ‘hair’!

I used to know someone - long passed that raised these and a bunch of other rare birds. Her place was like a zoo. That was the first time I had seen golden pheasants and still have some pictures. BUT never saw them fly. Wow spectacular!

Growing up in western Pennsylvania, the ring-necked pheasant was a somewhat rare sight in the wild, and one could spend days hunting for them along woodlines and cornfields without seeing one. If you did see one, they were very wary, and would fly away in the blink of an eye.

When I went to Korea, I was first assigned to Yongsan Garrison which is in the middle of downtown Seoul. The first morning I was there, I stepped out of my BOQ and there was one pecking away in the dirt no more than 20 feet away, not seeming to care that I was even there.

These birds are scientifically Chrysolophus pictus, with the genus name meaning "golden crested." Many follow Rush in referring to #40 as Ronaldus Magnus. Well, #45 is Chrysolophus Magnus! Someone needs to redo the Twitter icon in this style.
