Bloomberg says life would have turned out different ‘if I had been black’

Mike Bloomberg spent the day before Martin Luther King Jr. Day speaking about how race played a role in his own success as a businessman, saying that his life “would have turned out very differently if I had been black.”

Speaking to a crowd of several hundred at the Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Sunday, the billionaire presidential candidate discussed his white privilege as part of his push to earn support among black and brown communities.

“As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have been possible in America, and I think that’s true, but I also know that my story would have turned out very differently if I had been black, and that more black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white,” Bloomberg said.

“For black Americans, there was nothing that white landowners, businesses, banks and politicians might not take: Their wages and their homes, their businesses and their wealth, their votes and their power, and even their lives,” the former New York City mayor added.

Bloomie’s worth about 50 billion. He could do us all a favor by providing the “reparations” out of his own funds.

Maybe something like $1500 for every black man, woman and child in the country?

No sh*t, Sherlock. The odds of you making it out of the womb would’ve been against you.

Race has nothing to do with being qualified to be POTUS.

Yes. Those white men are known as Democrats. Democrats.

Right. Because black people are born too inferior to grow up and become billionaires. Am I right, Oprah? Up high!

I know enough about my colored cousins to know that this sort of talk will be taken in the worst possible way; seen in the worst possible light. Most African-Americans I know would be offended as hell by this.

This guy is as tone-deaf as it gets.

Mini mike is tone-deaf. This is cringeworthy.

Yup. See my above. The folks I know would read this as an insult, that somehow they are EXPECTED to do worse... expected by WHITES to do worse....

Mike reinforces this with his comments. He is as tone-deaf as is humanly possible.

He has just accused every one of his teachers, college professors, mentors, past employers, etc. of racism. I'll bet virtually every one of these people in Bloomberg's past would have turned handsprings to help along a similarly talented young black man.

The major risk Bloomberg would have faced, as compared to his real life experience, would have been allowed to skate by as a token, held to lower standards and perhaps promoted too fast into a mismatched position by someone trying to hit racial quotas.

Now, if Bloomberg means to make a generic, law of averages argument fine. His risk of being born to a single mom and being raised in the projects would indeed have been higher had he been black. But I don't think that's the point he was trying to make.
