Electric taxis will charge up wirelessly as they wait on the rank as part of a £3.4 million trial, ministers announced today.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the new technology could eventually be used by public drivers of electric cars.

Ten taxis in Nottingham will be fitted with the hardware later this year.

When they are parked over pads installed in the ground, their batteries will charge automatically.

The system recognizes the vehicle and bills the driver for the power.

The technology removes the need for cables and fixed charging points. …

Wonder what the charging rate is? Can’t be very large.

Too bad we can’t do this with gas.

Pay an extra dime a gallon for a robot to fill up your tank :)

I will be using gasoline for a long time as my Challenger is going nowhere.

If electric cars are getting that much better every year, as even some here say, and the companies can survive and maybe thrive without any govt help, that’s great.

As long as I can keep my car.

Hmm; that’s kind of an ambiguous statement. ☺️

“Wonder what the charging rate is?”

Well think of this, how big is a wireless charger compared to the phone that it’s charging? Now scale it up to charge a car (or a fleet of cars) and you have some idea of what they are proposing here. Or I have an idea, stick to a regular car that I can refuel wherever I run low and I can do it in 10 minutes.

Yeah how can I use a lot of gas if my car is going nowhere :)

I realized that while I was typing but was too lazy to change it.

Now THAT’S laziness :)

I put very miles on every year. The last inspection was great. So barring catastrophe, I should have it a long time.

But cars are a little like humans in the way of aging.

Parts just go after enough years. And that can add up.

I used to work at a refinery. It was nice. If you wave a wand over a barrel of oil, lots of other products come out.

Their term for a taxi stand.

It does evoke things malodorous.

Wireless chargers use magnetic resonance. Might be trouble for anyone with a pacemaker or metal pins in their body.

They going to scrape an electrode on the ground like the old trollys or did they find a way to push enough charging amps thru 4 rubber tires ?

The coil is only about 1 inch square. Most of what you see is for supporting the phone.

Scaled up about 1 meter square.

It was the first thing I thought of. Potential for significant unforeseen consequences. And nothing brings out hordes of lawyers like unforeseen consequences.
