The Trump administration on Friday announced plans to roll back school lunch standards originally promoted by former first lady Michelle Obama.
The new standards will allow schools more flexibility "because they know their children best," the Agriculture Department said in press release.
Schools and school districts continue to tell us that there is still too much food waste and that more common-sense flexibility is needed to provide students nutritious and appetizing meals. We listened and now were getting to work, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said.
The proposed new rules build on previous steps taken by the Trump administration to roll back the controversial school lunch rules which were championed by Obama as part of her Lets Move! healthy living campaign and signed into law by former President Obama.
Trump should visit an elementary school to pass out pens for the kids to sign away the legislation with
There’s a 20 year old in my office that remembers “Let’s Move” in HS. He says almost 100% ended in the trash.
It’s disgusting for first ladies to promulgate rules.
This should’ve happened 5 minutes after taking office. I know, there were more pressing things that Hussein screwed up and needed fixing, like the economy.
Send the first one to Michelle. :^)
When I was a kid in elementary school, they made lunch from scratch. I went to rural schools and all the cooks knew how to cook. There wasn’t a day that went by where we couldn’t wait ‘til lunch.

ABSOLUTELY! BUMP!

Quick, sell your stock in kale farms.
No reason Trump had to get involved other than to tell Perdue to get rid of it. If Perdue is doing anything useful, I’ve yet to hear about it. Maybe he’s been busy trying to increase exports of ag goods. I really don’t know.
I remember that. Everything was homemade, even the hot dog buns.
I’m surprised it’s just NOW being rolled back.
Agre...should’ve happened on at least Day 2.
Hahaaaa bi@@@@@@@@@@tch!
That boiled cabbage smell! YUCCH!
Thanks for your interesting reminiscence. Nothing beats American country cooking, especially in the South.
I grew up in an urban school system, and while I can’t say we were treated to great country cooking every day, it sure beat the alternative — a brown bag packed by my mother, containing a bologna sandwich on white, three small cookies, and an apple.
What really frosted me was hearing the other kids complain about the food. It was hot, the portions were adequate, and there was something different every day. And the price was a steal, even for privileged white boys like myself.
I’ll take that over a brown bag any day of the week.
