We're only about halfway through this year's flu season and the virus is hitting hard. Clinical nutritionist, Paige Welsch, joins FOX6 WakeUp with some ways to stay healthy.

Foods & Supplements To Support Immunity and to Prevent the Cold/Flu: Vitamin D3

Look for vitamin D3 with vitamin K2 for best absorption and utilization If available on the supplement label, look for the MK-7 form of vitamin K2 (there is MK-7 and MK-4) Your blood levels of vitamin D should be between 40 and 60 ng/mL for optimal health and immunity The medical range of vitamin D is between 20-100 ng/mL, so if you're below 40 ng/mL, you're more likely to get sick Food sources of vitamin D3 include salmon and other oily fish, egg yolks, mushrooms Tip: if you place mushrooms next to a window on a sunny day, they absorb vitamin D from the sunlight, increasing levels in the mushrooms Zinc

1.000 mg 3-4x/day Food sources of vitamin C include red and green peppers, kiwi, oranges, strawberries, broccoli, kale, parsley, Brussels sprouts, papaya Probiotics Food sources of probiotics include fermented sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, Kim chi, kombucha, miso What To Do During a Cold/Flu:

And liquor and homemade wine.0

I male 6 gallons of homemade wine every year. It’s ready in Dec or Jan.
I’ve never had a cold since doing it.
(Have had some unexplained bruises though...)

Has anyone ever tried Elderberry? Just curious as someone told me it helps keep the flu/colds away.

Sambucol. Take it when you first get the feeling you are about to get sick and your cold will never catch you.

Yes, that’s what Sambucol is made from.

Keep the ingredients onhand, use a couple times a year. Doubt it fights off a cold, but it does clear out the head in short order:

Sayeth the hippy chick they interviewed from the health food store.

How did people live healthy lives before supplements?

They ate real food, kept their drinking under control, went outside and did things and slept as long as it was dark.

I have several boxes of Sambucol at my house .

Usually they work like a charm but, three days ago, I started feeling ill, so I took several tablets. For some reason, this time they didn’t help. I’m currently on antibiotics for a sinus infection and not feeling my best.

Maybe I started on the Sambucol too late because they usually knock the virus right out.

If you are (correctly) taking antibiotics it’s not a virus.

if you place mushrooms next to a window on a sunny day, they absorb vitamin D from the sunlight ... .

Say what?

Vitamin D is NOT found in sunlight!

In humans, an inactive form of Vit D is synthesized in the skin in response to exposure to UVB rays present in sunlight.

Inactive forms of Vit D must then pass through the liver and kidney where activation to, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (Calcitriol), the biologically active form of vitamin D, takes place.

Mushooms, exposed to UVB rays found in sunlight, respond similarly as above. Thus mushrooms may provide an exogenous, nutritive source of Vit D.

Thanks. I got some today thinking it might help me since I’m around my school-aged grandchildren who seem to bring colds and flu home.

Although Vitamin D and MK-7 are superb, in my experience, Beta-Glucan, MGN-3, Sambucol, and Black Walnut Hull Extract also help stimulate the immune system and prevent or diminish the flu and colds.
