When a man allegedly drove away from the scene of a 2018 fender-bender, a Seattle police officer told one of the man's friends that the crash left a woman in critical condition, a police watchdog says.
The woman "might not survive," the officer added, according to a report from the Seattle Police Department's Office of Police Accountability.
But the story about the woman's condition was all a trick -- a ruse to flush out the driver, the report said. The OPA says the driver's friends reported that he grew worried in the days after the crash, thinking that someone possibly died in the wreck.
Less than a week after the crash, his roommate found the man dead in his room.

Less than a week after the crash, his roommate found the man dead in his room.
[T]he officer told his partner that he would use the ruse if they found the suspect and said "it's a lie, but it's fun," his partner recalled, according to the OPA report.
The officers left the home of the driver's friend after she gave them his number. It's unclear if they tried to call the driver.
After the driver's death, his friends and mother began looking into the hit-and-run. The friend who was contacted by police filed a complaint with the OPA in March 2019, prompting the watchdog investigation.
During the investigation, one of the driver's friends told the agency that at some point everyone believed the driver "had hit and killed someone but that he did not remember it."
"He didn't remember the incident and was freaking out," his roommate told the agency, according to the report.

Moral of the story is don’t hit and run.
If dude was soooo upset, all he had to do was turn himself in to find out.
Dude wasn’t “afraid he’d hurt someone”.
Dude was terrified he’d have to suffer the ramifications of hurting some one.
Dude was only worried for himself.
Yep, nailed. It happens more often than people think it does.
CNN is saying this like it’s a bad thing.
He’s not going to do it again and the public is safer for it.
Demonizing the police is a favorite pasttime around here.
Police are not guilty if stupid people commit suicide.<<
nope..,you’re right.,We need more lying cops!...../s
What a monster. But really, people need to check up on things before taking rash action.
Well, in some areas they seem to be hiring really inept people and not vetting them properly. (We’ve recently had a couple of instances in my area where police officers intimidated women into sexual acts - and there was that one who killed the Australian woman, another instance of someone who, had he been properly vetted, would never have been allowed on the force.)
Even more concerning are the number of poorly-vetted people who work in public schools around here, and perpetrate sexual acts against the kids in their care. We’ve had several cases of that, in my area.
But most people who go into law enforcement - and teaching - are decent, and trying to do their best. When the system fails, it’s not just because an individual was bad, but because the system failed to perform the requisite effort to ensure safety. People are afraid to be accused of ‘discrimination’, so they skimp on standards and give just about anybody a pass.
[[It seems like just another attempt to demonize all police officers.]]
It is, that’s a famous past time here on FR
[[I really doubt that such an outcome was expected.]]
Exactly=- the police didn’t send him 1000’s of text messages telling him to kill himself like the woman did to her boyfriend
[[It seems like just another attempt to demonize all police officers.]]
Yep- pretty soon- all police will be bad because a police officer lied to a pimp or a whore in sting operations, or lied to pedophiles by pretending to be young people on the internet, and then the criminals killed themselves either before or after they get out of jail
Remember now, Police bad- no good- Yadda Yadda Yadda- fall in line
Blaming the cop for his suicide is like blaming trump for the Iranians shooting down that plane.
In an adult world, adults are responsible for their actions.
As I stated earlier, if they lie with impunity to the ones they supposedly serve, why should the public not lie right back?
This is why smart people NEVER talk to the police.

Reminds me of an incident in which tough love resulted in a suicide.
Any police department (or university faculty, or military unit, etc.) is only as good as the worst psycho they tolerate. ~ H/T RedStateRocker
sounds to me like the police told the friend one thing and the family and friends played “telephone” with the info creating a worse scenario. Instead of owning up to fault the driver took himself or had help (family or friend) being stupid and taking himself out.
problem is the driver left scene of accident. all the rest stems from that fact, breaking of law by driver.
The guy did a hit and run - no sympathy if he was so stupid to believe them.
Yeah, callous , lying LEO’s... another day at the office, nothing to see here, move along... all is well...what could possibly go wrong
The cop made up a story to try and flush a criminal out. What is the difference between this and cops going under cover as prostitutes and drug dealers, which is in a sense ‘lying’, in order to flush out bad people?
Some people caught in these stings were embarrassed so much they committed suicide. Police’s fault?
