SANTA CLARA
The 49ers handled business in their first playoff game Saturday at Levis Stadium, thumping the No. 6 seed Minnesota Vikings 27-10 in their NFC playoff game.
Here are our grades.
Passing offense: D
Jimmy Garoppolo got going early, completing 5 of 6 passes on his first series that ended in a 3-yard Kendrick Bourne touchdown in the back of the end zone. Garoppolo made a bad decision near the end of the first half when he threw an interception to linebacker Eric Kendricks while looking for Deebo Samuel on a post route. Garoppolo was asked to throw just 19 times, his fewest of the season, while the running game was San Franciscos bread and butter. Garoppolo finished 11 of 19 for 131 yards with a touchdown and interception, and a passer rating of 74.7.

When the running game is your “bread and butter” you can do anything .
Niners would have won if they never threw a single pass.
Well, he is from florida.
Wish the Gators had him, but Chump couldn’t recruit worth squat.
“Once SF discovered they could run for 1st down at will, they quit throwing the ball.”
yeah, haven’t seen a dominant rushing attack like that in a very long time ...
Indeed, he’s an excellent passer.
Yep, especially that Clowney goon.
I agree. But the game will be the true Superbowl as I believe the NFC West is the toughest, roughest division in the NFL today. If Seattle and SF met up again, it will be a donnybrook. They are evenly matched and it will be down to the wire. For fans of those two teams it will be an exciting game. As a SF Fan for decades, not counting the Kapernick years (can we forget he existed?) I don’t know if the 49ers will get past Seattle. Whatever happens, SF has had a great season following those lean years since Steve Young. (Yeah I know Kapernick went to the Superbowl to only lose...)
Anybody but Seattle.
And i’m glad Baltimore is out.
I agree.. that score was not indicative of the beatdown the Niners gave to the Vikes.
I listened to the Titans’ radio feed on XM since I was driving during the game. It was stunning how many times their announcer yelled SACK and how fortuitous were the turnovers (but TN made them happen). You’d never have known they were 9-7 and beat a 14-2 team...that’s playoff football.
But they were 8-3 since Tannehill took over.
It seems like was the season of backup QBs. Tannehill, Minshew when Foles went down then returned then got benched, Jones for Manning (though you could see that one coming), Moore for Mahomes when he was injured, Newton and Allen, if you stretch it you could say Brissette when Luck retired, and even my Eagles who’ve had backup QB drama for the past few seasons has some backup drama in their Wild Card game.
Heisman and Nat’l Champs at Alabama. And he is a good young man, too.
He didn’t get drafted until the middle of the 2nd round as I recall.
Of course he is.
So, they never stayed with their game plan. They never gave Cook a chance to establish the run. They put their QB in a bad situation.
The 49ers did not take control of the game until an interception followed by a fumbled punt.
No guarantee the Viking would have won, but if they stuck with the run, they would have had a chance.
“What he avoided saying is, they only rushed the ball 10 times. “
So when stuffed twice, you run again at 3rd and 8?
When you can’t get a first down, you can’t run. There really is no option.
And you have to knock out 4-6 yards on first down to even run on second.
They were manhandled on both sides of the line. And they went home sore and beaten.
Niners play smashmouth football, and that’s what wins in the playoffs.
Rushing and defense wins playoff football.
