Alligators don't typically swim, or die, in the ocean. But researchers dropped three of them, dead ones, underwater to see how deep-sea creatures would react to finding a new and unusual food source.
The dead-alligator experiment was aimed at better understanding underwater food systems. Edibles like phytoplankton and other plant life don't exist on the deep-sea floor, so dwellers down there must sustain themselves by eating "marine snow" -- animal waste, scraps of decaying creatures and other organic debris that drifts from above.
Because alligators sometimes find themselves in ocean waters, searching for new food sources or flushed there by a hurricane, the scientists wanted to see if deep-sea creatures would nibble on the dead gators, or ignore them.

Elk in Kentucky?
Better experiment. If you drop three dead Democrats in the desert, do they still vote?
See ya later, alligator...
Go Gators!
2 sets of boots? wth, nothing better to do with em?
“Elk in Kentucky?”
They’ve sighted Elk in Tennessee.
“Yes, what happened? I hate clicking the link to read...Im too lazy.”
Well, the depth and pressure somehow re-instilled life into the gators and they became zombie-like. Netflix has already snatched rights to the title “The Swimming Dead”, a new TWD spinoff series.
I think there are some in the mountains of NC. Iirc, some governmental or conservation group are trying to re-establish them there.
I can't imagine it was too much, it's not like dead alligators are hard to source in Louisiana or a boat that'll get you out in the Gulf of Mexico.
I'd rather some tax money be spent on something like this that'll let us learn about the world around us than giving it to some welfare rats so they can buy steak and Mad Dog 20/20.
If you dropped a liberal into the ocean with an anchor around his neck would anything eat him/her or would him/ her just float to the top as scum. Repeat 32,000,000 times just to make sure you have accurate data.
THEY'RE OUT THERE...
They have a limited hunt, picked by lottery. It surprised me, since I thought that their range was limited to the west.
Westbrook - my very first thought too. Some inane grant and some idiot gets it. From US. To do THIS!! It’s gotta stop.
“Better experiment. If you drop three dead Democrats in the desert, do they still vote?”
Early and often.
“Whatever did that had to be huge.”
Cthulu hungry.
Wow, the usual suspects. Sharks, isopods, marine worms. I’m pretty sure the same fate has fallen upon things not normally found on the seabed, say humans, for a long time.
It hasnt bitten any one, yet.
Why didn’t they drop a camera down there while they were at it?
