New York’s beer tax is relatively low. Some lawmakers want to double it

ALBANY, NY -- It may be one of the few taxes in which New York state’s bite doesn’t rank among the nation’s highest.

Now, some New York City lawmakers want to more than double the state’s beer excise tax to provide more money for the State University of New York system.

The excise tax, paid by beer distributors, is currently 14 cents per gallon. Bills introduced ahead of the upcoming State Legislature session would raise that to 30 cents per gallon (that matches the state’s current excise tax on wine).

The Assembly sponsor of the bill, Brooklyn Democrat Harvey Epstein, estimates the increased beer tax would boost the state’s revenues from about $45 million to $96 million per year. Epstein’s bill would direct the added revenue to support both SUNY and CUNY (the City University of New York).

I was always surprised at the low prices in NYC delis. I remember getting a six-pack of premium beers like Bass Ale, Beck’s, Coors for $7.

If Cuomo and Deblasio really want to take in the tax money all they need do is tax alcoholic beverages at the same rate tobacco products are taxed.
They could make the state and city solvent in six months!!

That’s a great way to put it; NJ has the same strategy - and both are paying dearly. Imported underclasses don’t replace middle-class Americans; it just doesn’t work.

If they really want to raise revenue they should TAX All Legal Size paper at 10 cents a sheet.

The tax is always about the cause, not the corruption.

We signal our virtue to prevent alcoholism.

Instead, fat cats get their pensions paid by beer drinkers.

Put up a large sign at the bar. Paying beer tax to pay fat cat pensions.

Minnesota has a 9.8% sales tax on all alcoholic beverage products. Part of this tax went to build the billion dollar MN Vikings stadium the rest as my mother used to say goes to buy sand to fill rat holes...typical government boondoggles.
