Well, if you read the article, she's correct. She's saying that being attracted to children is not a crime, but acting on that attraction is a criminal act.

It’s sick to be sexually attracted to children, even if you don’t act on it.

Having gone to Rutgers, my first thought was “Rutgers is going to embarrass itself again?”. Their professors are extremely liberal. I couldn’t find a link but read the interview. I agree though, it doesn’t seem like she is excusing the behavior in any way and advocates more information to try to recognize and treat it early on before an offense. From that excerpt, hard to argue especially if it can prevent children from being molested.

Exactly! Homosexuality may be genetic as is alcoholism, and other behaviors However, there is no right to exercise such “diseases” to the harm of others. It IS a CHOICE to continue to behave in such ways.

Its a meaningless distinction in terms of public policy. Obviously, the state can’t know (nor does the law punish) mere thoughts. She talks about the need for treatment, but who goes for treatment, and how does the state ostensibly offer treatment, for thoughts that have never been acted on?

I agree. In simpler times we called it temptation vs. sin. Temptations come in many forms, but choosing to give in to temptation is what turns that into a sinful act.

As a matter of law and public policy we don't (nor should we) recognize "thought crime". We criminalize and prosecute unlawful behavior, not thoughts.

As the dead soul left took over the American Psychological Association the defined forms of mental illness quickly eroded to allow almost all aberrant behaviors as near normal if not normal. I saw it happening in the seventies with the changes in textbooks for Abnormal Psychology.

Few would argue with that. The bigger question is why would she write this, especially given that barring some extreme medical procedure that no one is going to volunteer for, one’s sexual desire is always going to be there. And in all likelihood, acted on.

“We need to prevent pedophiles from sexually offending and to do that, we need to refocus on early intervention, treatment and prevention.” The secular humanist dead soul like this woman will never see the true source of this aberrant behavior pattern. That’s why they believe ‘society’ can fix the problem with ‘behavior modification’, leaving the deadness of the soul to fester the disease throughout life.

I didn’t read it and I don’t intend to read it, but if what you say is accurate, she is correct. The attraction is mental illness, but it can’t be a crime until it is acted upon. A bit of a catch 22 for society.

I do find it interesting that for liberals there are things that they consider a crime before they happen. Things like gun ownership and so-called hate crimes based on speech alone.

It’s an interesting viewpoint and she makes a compelling argument. People who only read the headline shouldn’t comment on any articles.
