As we head into a 2020 offseason in which about 70% of the NFLs players are black, and the NFL itself is celebrating a 100th anniversary that is filled with all kinds of racial inequality, the current state of black head coaching candidates, and other candidates of color, should be a much bigger concern than it is. How did we get here, and why does the NFL fail to find a solution to what seems to be a simple problem of excellence and equality?

What I’ve recently discovered is the day after the game, you can get on Youtube and see a 10 minute (high compression) replay of a game. You see all the interesting plays and get a lot of enjoyment from those 10 minutes.
Heck, the league has a hard enough time selecting QB’s that have any ability. The league is a network. They’re going to hire the best networked candidates. If you want to call that racist... I guess the glass is half full, or empty, depending on the viewer’s perspective.
“Football is a game that places a lot of value on speed. When is the last time a non-Black man won the 100 meter sprint? “
Valeri Borzov — Munich 1972. After 2 (Black) American sprinters were disqualified for oversleeping and missing their qualifying heats.
The larger question that idiots like Doug Farrar should ask, is if 70% of the players are black, and very few coaches are.....what might be the problem??? Its certainly not racism.
Seriously? They are interviewing the idiot Marvin Lewis now just to fill diversity quotas.
I greatly enjoyed the Vikings defeat of the ‘Aints, in which all three offensive heroes were white.
I think the last White guy to win the Olympic 100 meters was Alan Wells of Scotland. The U.S did not compete which probably helped.
All those Caribbean and African Countries were there tho.
Great players, for whatever reason, rarely make great coaches. Black, white, whatever...
Lewis was a great defensive coordinator. He should have stayed one. Jones did not want a dinosaur. McCarthy is younger and has a better track record.
Herm Edwards is currently the head coach at Arizona State.
Every NFL defensive team is disproportionally black.
NFL coaches are disproportionally white.
I believe it is for the same reason. -Tom
once the nfl opens up camps for disadvantage whites/asians/hispanics....then we'll talk....
I suffered through 15 years of Lewis in Cincinnati. He is the absolute worst head coach Ive seen in 50 years of watching NFL football.
You made two excellent points there.
Rich Kotite....
“Why do we have to treat blacks differently than whites?”
Haven’t you heard, blacks are exempt from having to be the best to get jobs, or into the best schools, or anything else.
I'm p.o.'d cause the NBA won't set parameters on how many blacks can out-jump whites!
Where is the fairness!?! Where are the honkies?? We invented baska-ball!
Not to mention sneakers and hot-dogs!! How 'bout money and wealth and mansions!
Damn it anyway!!
Imagine all the greats that would never have been hired in the past if race was the determining factor.
You can call it climate or cultural or both. When your head coach brings a failed cultural to a multicultural environment you have players who think “their” coach of “color” has to treat them differently as in less stringent standards of personal conduct in the locker room.
