I am familiar with Windows 7 and do not like Windows 10 shell, but I just switched to 10, and made it look just like 7. So now I can get Microsoft update support for many years, while the support for Windows 7 stops on January 14, 2020 making it more vulnerable to hacking after that date. The process was smooth and I like the results so far.
No problem, just holler if you need anything. I sent a couple PMs about that prior issue. :)
Thats useful information!
Thank you very much.
That was the first thing I did. This ain’t my first rodeo. ;-)

If your computer can not boot up from a bootable USB stick, with proper BIOS setting, your computer hardware is out of order!
I prefer 7 as well, and now I have a 10 which looks and feels like 7, and runs faster, and I can get security upgrades. I did not like Windows 10 menu’s out of the box.
I am even more impressed that Microsoft allowed me to do this upgrade FREE, issued a brand new key for Windows 10 making it a legal install, and even activated it automatically. Glad I got it done before security updates end on January 14th for Windows 7.
I held on to Win 7 because my 20 year old games run fine on it.
Got a Win 10 machine for Christmas and, lo and behold, almost all of my games run just fine on it. Didn’t even have to fiddle with the compatibility settings for the most part.
But as a bitter clinger, I like my Vista. It's so old hackers don't even bother.
I updated my Windows 7 machine to Win10, then an update for the new OS bricked the system to the point I had to install Ubuntu to avoid buying a new machine.
The Vista machine, which wasn't even eligible for the Win10 update, is still going strong.
Can one (on Win7) copy an entire harddisk verbatum to another to do this upgrade on (they are cheap these days ) — so that if most of your useful programs no longer work you can revert to your old system if your faulty upgrade turns out being being unreversable.
I skipped Vista entirely, along with Windows Me, and Windows 98. I went from DOS, to Windows 3.1, to Windows 95, to NT 4.0, to 2000, to XP, to 7, and then to 10.
IMHO, Windows was like the old Star Trek movies, just about every other one was crap.
I was going to ping, thought I'd better check first. :^)

Thanks and Congrats to entropy12 for a very useful post!
I guess it’s time for me to join the modern world ... down to the last week of so before all support ends...
RESIST! Learn Linux- use windows 7 in a dual boot configuration OR install windows 7 in a virtual machine (Which will actually be an excellent ‘sandbox’ environment to run it in- get a virus? No big deal- delete that session and boot a previously saved session that is virus free)
RESIST RESIST RESIST :)
After you download and install BOTH programs described in my original post, you will think you are still using Windows 7, but your computer will be working with Windows 10. So there is very little new learning involved.
Glad to be of help, and only reason I went through the trouble was I was surprised myself at the very good results. Can’t believe Microsoft is giving out free upgrade (which they don’t have to right now) and furnishing new Key automatically with that program which makes your Windows 10 legal. It even saved my Windows password, all mu Desktop icons, and with the classic shell added in, it mimics Windows 7 really well.
“Windows 7 was released over ten years ago. It is time to let go.”
I’m happy with Windows 7, and even liked much-maligned Vista. Windows 10 is an abomination — a toy. It seems it isn’t for serious work. I donated my new (2 years ago) Win 10 laptop to my husband and ordered a Win 7.
My old XP laptop is sitting on a shelf and I need to have it looked at due to a nasty blue screen. XP had the best Sound Recorder for basic stuff. I know it can be downloaded for 7 and 10, and I’ve done that, but it doesn’t give good quality.
