A team quarterbacked by Ryan Tannehill beat Tom Bradys Patriots in the playoffs in Foxborough. It was the second straight shocking loss for the Patriots, and it ended a season that started with so much promise and hope behind a historically good defense.
The Titans rode the NFL rushing champion, Derrick Henry, to the win. His 178 yards on the ground were the most for a player in the playoffs since Colin Kaepernick had 181 as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback in 2013.
This home loss in the wild-card is uncharacteristic for the Patriots. It prompts questions about the continued viability of a dynasty that began in 2001. One of the main characters, Brady, is now a free agent, and though it seems unlikely, its possible one of the greatest quarterbacks ever has played his last game with the only franchise hes ever known.

Just the other day I opined that the Patriots wouldn't be in the Super Bowl, didnn't know how quickly I'd be right. :^)

My last Jackie comments...lol
Landry when interviewed said
A) Jackie smith got them there called up out of retirement at 39 or 38?
B) Jackie still ran a 4.6 40 and had great hands usually
C) Landry and Roger said it was a difficult thrown pass
D) Landry and the team felt far worse for Jackie than they did losing the game and many told him he was why they were there in the first place
Landry famously did not suffer fools gladly so I lean to trusting his veracity
I also read Smith and his little wifey didnt talk about it for years till he made HOF in 1994
And Steve still has his bar down in five points.
Gronk’s a big guy. No idea what his motivations are. Could be the next Michael Strahan. /snark
His passing this year was off.
Not just receivers dropping balls, he missed a bunch of throws all year.
He could eke out another decent year perhaps but it is over. He just needs to choose his exit.
The Bills might be the up and coming team...I wouldn’t be surprised if they are the AFC East champs next year...
I don’t get it.
Does accuracy drop because you’re 42?
I know boxers (I was one) who boxed late into life, i’m talking mid 40s.
These were the guys who were All strength and NO moves.
But their punches were still accurate.
If they were the local best once, now they were in the top 25.
Brady was still in the top 10.
OK, so he’s NOT what he was.
Wouldn’t he still be loads better than many starters on other teams?
I could be completely wrong.
I think rummychick is saying that even congratulating isn’t enough.
Folks usually hang around for 10 minutes and joke and discuss the game with the other team.
That’s just not Brady.
And yeah he’s a sore loser but if the best he can do is congratulate the other QB, it is what it is.
I see both sides.
Much more importantly, nobody gives a dam what I think so i’ll finish here :)
Exactly. Brady had an OK offensive line, and nobody to throw to except Edelman - when he wasn’t double teamed.
The defense brought them to the playoffs.
Brady is still a top 10 QB. Most teams in the NFL would take him in a heartbeat. I won’t be surprised to see one more run next year.
Nope. Brady embraced Tannehill midfield first.
Saw it with my own 2 eyes.
I’m old enough to remember Johnny U. leaving Baltimore for Sandy Eggo.
Does accuracy drop because youre 42?
In this case I am saying that yes there was a drop off in his accuracy, whether he is 42 or not.
Yes, he can go the Brett Farve route and keep playing and yes he is still going to be fadingly great. Those great games become fewer, the net yards less.
I recall Johnny Unitas continuing to play until he was so battered and beaten he had to retire. To my young eyes it was a sad thing to see.
But I could be completely wrong also.
You’re the Third person to mention Unitas in these conversations.
I was born in ‘68!! :)
It will take me forever on google to find out what you guy can tell me in a few sentences.
What happened? Went to another team late in life and it was a disaster?
thanks ahead of time.
Yes.
He was traded to the Chargers and played one season with horrendous numbers.
A lot of it was that the Chargers sucked but Johnny U was over.
Here is a link to his stats: http://www.nfl.com/player/johnnyunitas/2527792/careerstats
I was born in the 50’s...he was my first hero.
3TD and 7INT...sheesh.
I see your point.
Funny, I never even saw my first hero play.
But when you’re a Jets fan, if Namath isn’t your hero, you can’t have one :)
They don’t need a “long” receiver. The patriots were successful with quick, smart, fast feet, first down machines and great physical tight ends....though Chris Hogan was a fabulous deep threat, he alo could run precise routes to get crucial 1st downs. Think back on those playoff games how clutch Danny Amendola was. He jept the pressure off of Edelman....and with Hogan in there they were unstoppable. They gave thos guys up for guys who simply aren’t Patriot type receivers. They should have kept those guys and gone after a quick physical tight end like the rest of the good teams are doing. Tight ends are so much more valuable than wideouts.
Thank you for clarifying wardaddy. I am a huge Pats, Brady. Belechik fan and think they are fabulous.
One problem with having star players in the age of salary caps is how much is left to pay the other players around them; I don’t follow football much (the last two complete games I watched were the two Super Bowls in which our Giants beat the Patriots), but I’d think that this causes problems. Brady was and is great, but is the talent around him as good as it had been?
Agree. Like Tony Romo said, Brady won’t let his career end like this.
He’ll be back, with the Pats (where else?) to prove he’s still got it - not like he used to, but good enough to win. And 12-4 is a great season in anyone’s book - so they did have a winning season - just not as good as they used to.
Loss was not Brady’s fault - if anything, his receivers, running backs. And the Titans defense was incredible.
I am NOT a Pats fan and always am for whoever they are playing. But I respect Brady as one of the best QB’s ever.......ONE of them.....
